TASTELESS HERBAL TEAS!
Q. Why do the teas I buy from health food stores seem tasteless? I am trying to drink less coffee and more tea but I can’t find an herbal tea that I like. What do you recommend?
Mary B.
A. For many years herbal teas were just that….nothing more than dried herbal (weeds) essence. You could count on it being nearly tasteless, odorless, colorless (unless you didn’t mind drinking what looked like dirty water) and usually meaningless colored water. The health food purists loved it, the buying public usually hated it.
Fast forward to today’s herbal tea market and you’ve got a whole different pot brewing. Many of the herbal tea companies that began back in the 1960’s and 70’s have begun to listen to their customers. They are now expanding there lines to include herbal teas that are now blended or “infused” with natural flavor enhancing substances. These are usually products that will give it a boldness or “kick” such as ginger, mint, berries, cinnamon etc.
You may also want to try adding you own flavor enhancing to your herbal tea. Try a squeeze of lemon or a teaspoon of honey the next time you brew.
Check out your health food store again and look for some new herbal tea blends by the following manufacturers: Celestial Seasonings, Good Earth Teas, Higher Living Teas and Dr. Stuart’s Tea Company.

12 oz SUGAR SODA RAISES DIABETES RISK 22 %!
(AMV) According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 310 million people worldwide are affected by type 2 diabetes, a long-term condition characterized by insulin resistance. What is at the heart of this growing epidemic? According to a new European study, the mass availability of sugary soda drinks may be one of the greatest single contributing factors to the growing diabetes epidemic. In fact, researchers concluded that drinking only one 12-ounce can of sugar sweetened soda a day raises the risk of diabetes by 22 percent compared with drinking just one can a month. The study involved data from 350,000 people in eight European countries. The study questioned everyday people about how many sugary, artificially sweetened soft drinks and juices they drank each day. The research further explained that fruit juice consumption and diabetes incidence are not linked.
High fructose corn syrup, the evil culprit
In the 1970s, HFCS began replacing cane sugar, due to the fact that HFCS is much cheaper to produce. According to Dana Flavin, author of the article "Metabolic Danger of High-Fructose Corn Syrup", "HFCS is now the primary caloric sweetener added to soft drinks in the United States, and comprises more than 40 percent of caloric sweeteners added to foods and beverages."
Between 1970 and 1990, the annual intake of HFCS increased by more than 1,000 percent, greatly exceeding the change in intake of any other food group.
HFCS, derived from genetically modified corn, is a man made product that goes through a series of processes that break it down into starch, glucose, and fructose using enzymes produced by bacteria and fungus.
The end product contains about 80 percent fructose, which is rabidly converted to fat by the liver, leading to an excess concentration of fats and lipoproteins in the body. This causes a rise in triglyceride levels, promoting atherosclerosis, elevated cardiovascular risk, and increased incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Studies show that HFCS may be the evil culprit spurring obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney stones, and gout.
Bone-destructive phosphoric acid
Phosphoric acid, the flavor additive that gives soda its tangy, sharp flavor, is also the acidifying agent that helps slow the growth of mold and bacteria in the sugary solution of soda. Its acidity level that makes soda a great agent for removing rust or scum build up around the toilet!
These similar effects happen inside the body. By creating a high acidity level inside the body, the body reacts by trying to neutralize the environment. This results in the body pulling calcium from the bones. This explains the link between phosphoric acid consumption and lower bone density.
The damage is even greater in the developmental stages of a person's life. According to a 1994 Harvard study done on bone fractures in teenage athletes, 14-year-old girls who drank cola were about five times more likely to suffer bone fractures than girls who didn't consume soda pop.
Cancer-causing caramel flavoring
The Center for Science in the Public Interest filed a petition to the FDA in February of 2011 to ban the use of caramel colorings in soda. From their studies they found out that the caramel coloring in soda contains two cancer-causing chemicals.
The chemistry behind caramel coloring starts by reacting sugars with ammonia and sulfites under high pressure and temperatures. These chemical reactions result in the formation of 2-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole, two chemical formations that have been shown to cause thyroid, liver, and lung cancer in laboratory rats. The National Toxicology Program reports that these animal carcinogens, toxic to laboratory rats, pose similar risks to humans.
Ditching soda, introducing fresh juice may be the best remedy
Treating type 2 diabetes with pharmaceutical drugs but still drinking high fructose corn syrup-laden soda is a counterproductive approach to good health. Ditching soda may be the best remedy for those suffering from a wide array of health problems. One of the simplest solutions to vitality today is found in eliminating high fructose corn syrup, caramel coloring, phosphoric acid and replacing it all with fresh fruit and vegetable juice. The myth that healthy food is too expensive is a fallacy. Juicing fruits and vegetables every day costs way less than a weekly 24-pack of soda and a prescription drug regime. Either way, the benefits of juicing, in regards to quality of life, will always be worth the price.

WATERMELON CAN HELP PREVENT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE!
(AMV) According to a new study, a pre-hypertensive condition is one of the major risk factors for serious health threats such as strokes and heart attacks. However, not too many people are aware that simply eating watermelons can be very effective in naturally fighting off pre-hypertension and therefore, considerably lessening the risk for heart attacks and strokes.
Food scientists from the Florida State University have discovered that consuming 6 grams of L-citrulline contained in watermelon extract for a period of six weeks helped normalize the blood pressure of all the participants in the study (nine adults) who were previously observed to have raised blood pressure. This recent activity was reported in The News.
The research
The lead researcher of the group that conducted the new study, Dr. Arturo Figueroa, claimed that the team is the first to document the significant improvements in aortic hemodynamics in middle-aged people (both men and women) who have been diagnosed to be pre-hypertensive, but are otherwise healthy, and regularly receiving therapeutic watermelon doses.
To put it simply, the findings imply that the common watermelon, sometimes called the "functional food" possesses a vasodilatory effect. Dr. Figueroa further adds that watermelon consumption can actually keep pre-hypertension at bay, and prevent it from advancing into a full-blown case of hypertension; and as previously mentioned, hypertension is the precursor to more serious health conditions such as strokes and heart attacks.
The big and usually round in shape watermelon fruit is not only a refreshing and satisfying treat during hot weather conditions. It is also known as the richest edible source of L-citrulline, a type of amino acid that helps promote and regulate healthy blood pressure. Once it is in the body, L-citrulline is processed and converted into another type of amino acid, L-arginine.
However, when taken in the form of a dietary supplement, L-arginine can cause some minor side effects. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal problems, particularly among adults who may already be experiencing increased blood pressure at the time of intake.
Dr. Figueroa further implied that those who have arterial stiffness and elevated blood pressure - specifically people who have been diagnosed with various chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus, or those who are older - have a lot to gain from the intake of L-citrulline in either its synthetic or natural form.
Its natural and safer form, of course, is the watermelon; fruit safer because being natural, it does not come with any unwanted side effects. This is particularly ideal for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions like those mentioned above. With these facts, people may see the common watermelon in a different light.
The study discussed above was recently included in the pages of the American Journal of Hypertension.

(AMV) Drinking a can of sugar-laced soda a day will raise your risk of developing diabetes by 22 percent! According to a new study out today evidence suggests that just one 12-ounce serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage can significantly raise the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
What's interesting about this this is that since most of the research on the evil effects of soda has been done on people in the US, researches at the Imperial College of London set up to seek a link between soda consumption and type 2 diabetes in Europeans as well.
The British researchers used 15 years of data compiled from over 27,000 people from seven European countries. Over that 15-year period, more than 40 percent of those people developed type 2 diabetes and those who said they consumed at least one soda or similar sweet drink showed an 18 percent higher risk of developing the disease! When they took out factors such as weight and body mass index, the risk rose to 22 percent!
Coincidentally, these findings were right in line with the US studies showing a 25 percent percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes when consuming one soda per day. When the researchers looked at the diet soda drinkers in the group, they noticed something quite striking. When they factored in body weight and exercise, they healthy weight people in the group who drank diet soda were no more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-soda drinkers. This basically proves that you are at least 22 percent more likely to develop diabetes if you drink a can of soda each day. Scary stuff!
How can just one little soda do so much damage?
Sweetened drinks are the largest contributor to empty calories and processed sugar in both the American and European diets according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The sweeteners in these drinks along with artificial colors, flavors and phosphoric acid all have negative effects on the human body.
What about other sweet drinks like fruit juice?
Fruit juice consumption was not linked to diabetes incidence. In fact, natural drinks with sugars and flavors occurring naturally such as organic fruit juices have shown no evidence of increased risk of diabetes in otherwise healthy people.
Patrick Wolfe, a statistics expert from University College London who was not involved in the research, said the message from its results was clear.
"The bottom line is that sugary soft drinks are not good for you - they have no nutritional value and there is evidence that drinking them every day can increase your relative risk for type 2 diabetes," he said in an emailed comment.
Clearly the proven negative effects of soda should be enough to scare you into reconsidering taking a sip of the potentially lethal surgery poison drink.

By Dr. Matthew Marturano
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released striking statistics that indicated the prevalence of autism is now around 2 percent, or about one in 50 Americans. While this may represent improvements in detection and reporting mechanisms, rather than simply an increase in incidence, the numbers are no less sobering.
While decades of research have failed to identify a single cause for autism -- indeed it looks likely there is no single cause to be found -- a recent study has implicated a culprit increasingly found to be at the root of a myriad of disease processes: oxidative damage.
Researchers at the University of California, Davis Center for Children's Environmental Health published findings from a 10-year study which suggest levels of oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in autistic children is similar to that expected to be found in older individuals. Titled the Childhood Autism Risk from Genes and Environment study, or CHARGE, the investigation looked into markers for oxidative damage from reactive oxygen species (ROS) in children and their parents.
What are ROSs?
ROS are, to a certain degree, a natural byproduct of metabolism. During the biochemical processes that convert carbohydrates to biologically useful energy, a certain amount of that energy is lost as potentially dangerous molecules known as free radicals. While the body employs several overlapping mechanisms to neutralize free radicals, these mechanisms can become overwhelmed by environmental toxins -- such as heavy metals and tobacco smoke -- and can also be weakened by a low intake of antioxidants from the diet.
Free radicals which escape neutralization by the body's defense systems increase oxidative stress which contributes to damage to mtDNA. This can result in a greater inefficiency of energy-producing processes in the mitochondria which, in turn, increases the amount of free radicals produced by metabolism. What is worse, we now know certain types of DNA damage can be passed down through several generations.
Foods and Supplements to Improve Antioxidant Status
Fortunately, there are several steps that can be taken to offset oxidative damage to DNA. The simplest is to increase intake of foods which contain high amounts of antioxidants. In other words, more vegetables and fruits (Are we noticing a trend here?). Now here's the bad news. Between decades of farming practices that deplete nutrients in the soil, along with a staggering increase of toxins and pollutants coming at us from all angles, correcting generations of low antioxidant status through food alone is most likely an impossible task. In these cases, additional supplementation is needed over and above a complete dietary overhaul.
- Vitamin C: This vital nutrient is found in dark leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, cilantro, peppers and citrus fruits. Unfortunately, it would take upwards of six daily servings in order to get the amount of vitamin C needed for extra antioxidant protection. For this reason, I recommend 2 g daily of a buffered vitamin C supplement for anybody seeking these benefits.
- Vitamin A: Vitamin A is particularly abundant in organ meats, such as liver, which is an indication of how important it is to our metabolism as organs are much more metabolically active than muscle tissue. Luckily, there is an alternative for those uninterested in incorporating a weekly serving of organic calf's liver into their diet. Since the body can convert beta carotene to vitamin A internally, fruits and vegetables containing this nutrient can be eaten in order to boost these levels. Simply look for anything orange, as beta carotene is the molecule which imparts this color to foods. For supplementation, start at 10,000 IU of beta carotene daily.
- Vitamin E: This antioxidant is found most abundantly in seeds and nuts, along with vegetable oils. Sadly, it would take about 10 cups of almonds a day to reach the levels needed to improve antioxidant status. To supplement, take 400 IU daily of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols.
- CoQ10: This molecule is one of the few antioxidants that can be completely synthesized internally by the body. However, since it's the primary antioxidant present in mitochondria, those with mitrochondrial damage may not be able to produce sufficient amounts on their own. When supplementation is needed, the dosage typically starts at 100 mg daily of CoQ10 as ubiquinol.
Although supplementation of these nutrients at the above recommended levels is well within safety limits, it's always wise to get nutrient levels checked before beginning a more aggressive supplement program, as this can reveal additional information which will make a supplement program much more effective. If you or a loved one suffers from autism, I recommend you seek out a naturopathic physician, dietitian or nutritionist trained in the administration and interpretation of these specialized tests.
While there is as yet little conclusive scientific evidence supplementation with antioxidants can improve autism, what we do know is oxidative stress and DNA damage is at the root of so many diseases. It just makes sense to do whatever we can to offset it. Diet and nutrition certainly play an important role as vegetables and fruits are likely to contain hundreds of different molecules which offer differing degrees of protection from oxidative damage which work together in a synergistic fashion that can never be replicated with supplements. On the other hand, supplements offer levels of specific antioxidant nutrients simply impossible to attain through food alone.
As always, the best approach is to use a combination of a healthy diet, lifestyle and supplements when indicated.

Q. I have had several rounds of chemo. (cancer) and am doing pretty good. I’m loosing weight but dr. keeps telling me I need to gain a few pounds My appetite sucks and nothing tastes as good as it used to. I would like to take a protein powder. Any suggestions?
Yvonne R.
A. The residual effects of chemotherapy can be tough to live with. Weight loss during chemo. due to food deprivation is not unusual. I have two recommendations based on customers (chemo. patients) who were sent to us by their doctors for these specific products:
1. PEA PROTEIN…This form of protein powder is emerging as an excellent source of highly absorbable, hypo-allergenic protein. Get mushed peas out of your mind. Pea protein powder is nearly tasteless, mixes well and has a PER (Protein Efficiency Ratio) nearly as high as whey (dairy) protein.
2. B VITAMIN-COMPLEX…Chemotherapy quickly robs the body of these water-soluble nutrients. Loss of B-vites. can cause loss of appetite and in-ability to taste food (nerve damage). Since B-vites. are synergistic (they all need each other to work) a B-Complex is your best bet. I would recommend taking an extra pill of B-12 (5000 mcg. methyl-cobalamin) along with the complex
.
These products can be found at most health food stores and online at www.eNutriShopPlus.com.

A chemical that naturally occurs in turmeric root appears to protect the heart from aging as much as moderate aerobic exercise, according to a trio of studies conducted by researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan.
Turmeric root has been an important component of traditional Asian medicinal systems for hundreds of years. In recent decades, scientific studies have confirmed the potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the trio of turmeric chemicals known as "curcuminoids," which give the root its distinctive yellow-orange color. Although only one of these chemicals is properly known as "curcumin," the name is commonly used to refer to all of them collectively.
The three new studies all compared the effects of exercise and curcumin on heart health and postmenopausal women over an eight-week period. All the studies were randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled. Curcumin was delivered by means of colloidal nanoparticles.
Can turmeric prevent heart disease?
In the first study, researchers assigned 32 women to either take a curcumin supplement, engage in moderate aerobic exercise training, or undergo no intervention at all. The researchers measured participants' vascular endothelial function - the responsiveness of the layer of cells that line the blood vessels, a key indicator of overall cardiovascular health - both at the beginning and end of the study. They found that while there was no improvement in the control group, endothelial function significantly increased in both the exercise and curcumin groups. Most surprisingly, the improvement in the two experimental groups was identical.
The second study examined curcumin's effects on the responsiveness of arteries to changes in blood pressure ("arterial compliance"), another key measure of cardiovascular health. In this study, 32 women were randomly assigned to receive either a curcumin supplement or a placebo pill, or to undergo an exercise routine plus either a curcumin or placebo pill. The researchers found no significant improvement in the control group, significant (and equivalent) improvements in both the exercise-only and curcumin-only groups, and the greatest improvement among participants who exercised and also took the supplements.
In the final study, researchers examined the effects of exercise and curcumin on the rate of age-related degeneration of the heart's left ventricle. 45 participants were randomly assigned into one of the same four groups used in the second study.
The researchers once again found that both exercise and curcumin produced significant increases in heart health. In this study; however, curcumin alone did not appear to provide any benefit. Specifically, brachial systolic blood pressure (SBP) decreased among participants who exercised, whether or not they took curcumin. In addition, heart-rate-corrected aortic augmentation index (AIx) and aortic SBP both decreased significantly only among participants who both exercised and took curcumin.
"Regular ingestion of curcumin could be a preventive measure against cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women," the authors of the first study wrote. "Furthermore, our results suggest that curcumin may be a potential alternative ... for patients who are unable to exercise."

You need at least 1g protein per pound of body-weight per day to maintain and build muscle. If you weigh 70kg/155lbs, that's 155g protein per day. The easiest way to get this amount is to eat whole protein with each meal.
Some of you are on a tight budget, still student, living in expensive cities or just frugal. These can make it hard to get the protein you need to build muscle. This post will help you — the 10 cheapest sources of protein to build muscle.
1. Canned Tuna. 40g protein/can. Buy tuna in spring water or brine. Don't worry about the mercury: 1 can chunk light tuna per day is safe, read this.
2. Whole Eggs. 7g protein/egg. Lower your body fat rather than throwing the yolk away if you have bad cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol isn't bound to blood cholesterol, and the yolk contains half the protein and vitamins A/D/E.
3. Whey. 1 scoop ON whey is 24g protein/30g serving. At 2 scoops/day, a 10lbs bag will last 10 weeks for 84,99$. You don't get cheaper than this. But don't rely on whey only because it's cheaper. Vary your protein intake.
4. Ground Beef. 25g protein/100g. Buy 80% ground beef and rinse the fat if lean beef is too expensive. You can reduce the fat content by as much as 50%. Read this free pdf on how to rinse ground beef.
5. Milk. 30g protein/liter milk. If you're a skinny guy, want to gain weight fast and don't bother gaining some fat, drink 1 gallon raw milk per day. Don't worry about the saturated fat. Stay away from milk if you want to lose fat.
6. Frozen Chicken Breast. 25g protein/100g. Cook the frozen chicken breast using a George Foreman Grill. Consume the chicken breast within 2 months of freezing for optimal tenderness & taste.
7. Cottage Cheese. 12g protein/100g. Cottage cheese is more expensive in Europe than in the US. We buy Quark cheese: 10g protein per 100g, cheaper than cottage cheese and a better taste.
8. Ground Turkey. 25g protein/100g. Expensive cuts are made from turkey breast. Cheaper cuts can contain skin, which increases the fat content. Rinse the fat like for ground beef using this method.
9. Canned Mackerel. 23g protein/100g. Canned mackerel is high in omega-3, contains less mercury than canned tuna, and tastes a lot better too.
10. Calves Liver. 20g protein/100g. Low fat and nutrient dense. Contrary to what you might believe, liver is safe. Try one of these recipes.
Bonus Tips. Buy generic food. Buy in bulk to get discounts. Freeze everything. Get a job if you don't have one. Increase your income if you do. Cut expenses. The following meal plan gets you +200g protein per day.
Breakfast: 3 whole eggs with spinach
Snack: 200g cottage cheese with apple
Lunch: 1 can of tuna with bok choy
Snack: 500ml raw milk and banana
Post workout: 1 scoop whey with oats & 500ml milk
Dinner: 150g chicken breast with pasta & broccoli
Pre bed: 200g cottage cheese with berries & flax seeds

Accidents happen. But if you equip yourself with knowledge about how to handle them calmly and effectively, their resultant injuries will not catch you off guard and without an appropriate plan of action. Here are seven herbal remedies you might want to keep on hand at all times, as they may come in handy as all-natural first aid in the event of an emergency situation:
1) Arnica Montana (Arnica). Cuts, wounds, bruises, and other external injuries tend to respond exceptionally well to Arnica Montana, an herb-based homeopathic remedy that has been around for many centuries. Long used throughout Europe and North America, Arnica Montana is commonly used in cream form to soothe muscles, reduce inflammation, and heal wounds. It can also be brewed into tea to help alleviate stress and promote restful sleep.
"Well-known in traditional medicine, [Arnica] is often the first remedy to be given after a fall, muscle strain, injury or surgery," explains Katherine East in an article for Natural News on the therapeutic benefits of Arnica. "When applied directly after an injury, Arnica significantly reduces bruise formation. It is also helpful for treating arthritis, burns, ulcers, eczema, and acne." (http://www.naturalnews.com/029118_arnica_healing.html)
2) Eupatorium Perfoliatum (Boneset). If you grew up playing the classic computer game Oregon Trail, you may recall that members of the wagon clan sometimes died of conditions like typhoid fever and snake poisoning. But if these fictional characters had an herb on hand known as Eupatorium Perfoliatum, also known as Boneset, they may have been able to survive these and other conditions.
"[Boneset is] a great remedy for treating the symptoms of influenza, and helpful for treating aches and pains and fever," explains the blog Prepared and Empowered. "In a survival instance, this herb can mean the difference between life and death in high fever or poisoning." (http://preparedandempowered.wordpress.com)
3) Symphytum Officinale (comfrey). Another excellent herb for first aid situations is comfrey. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), comfrey contains a substance known as allantoin that helps new skin cells grow. When its roots and leaves are ground and turned into a paste or cream, comfrey can be applied to skin and wounds to help alleviate inflammation, prevent bruising, and even heal pulled muscles and ligaments, fractures, sprains, strains, and osteoarthritis. (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/comfrey-000234.htm)
4) Aloe vera. One of the most medicinally-versatile herbs in the world, aloe vera is beneficial both internally and externally as an emergency remedy. A powerful analgesic, aloe vera gel is often used to treat cuts and scrapes, burns, sunburns, insect bites and other skin injuries. Aloe vera not only helps promote rapid wound healing by increasing the availability of oxygen and collagen, but it also helps fight damaging inflammation.
When taken internally, aloe vera helps promote healthy digestion, detoxify and cleanse the blood, ease inflammation and arthritic pain, and alkalize the body. It is also rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and glyconutrients, all of which play a vital role in regulating and normalizing systems of the body that may incur harm in an emergency situation.
5) Hyssopus Officinalis (Hyssop). Referenced in the Holy Scriptures as a powerful cleansing herb, hyssop continues to be used in traditional medicine as an expectorant, or to clear respiratory passageways of phlegm and other secretions. Hyssop also contains powerful anti-viral agents that make it an effective poultice for cuts, abrasions, sores and other skin wounds. (http://www.localharvest.org/hyssop-seeds-hyssopus-officinalis-C19819)
"Tea made from the flowers of this herb is good to have on hand for people needing assistance with breathing problems," says Prepared and Empowered. "It has positive effects on the lungs, and can be helpful for asthmatics."
6) Capsicum annuum (cayenne). Possessing an exceptional ability to increase circulation, cayenne pepper, and particularly the type in liquid form, can be applied to bandages to help boost the supply of fresh blood to a wound while stopping excessive bleeding. It can also be taken orally for the same purpose, as cayenne aids the body in naturally healing itself from a variety of health conditions. (http://www.gobeyondorganic.com)
"Taking cayenne in the mouth causes your body's circulation to spring into action in a dramatic way sending fresh blood to the areas of your body that most need it," explains EnerHealth Botanicals about the benefits of cayenne tincture. "Since many disease states involve poor circulation and in many cases stagnation of bodily fluids, the use of cayenne can have potent results in aiding a wide range of health complaints."
7) Echinacea Purpurea (Purple Coneflower). One of the most popular herbal medicines in use today, echinacea is an excellent emergency remedy for purifying the blood following bites by poisonous spiders and snakes. Echinacea can also be used to help treat ear and throat aches, as well as to fight infections and treat lymphatic problems. (http://www.motherearthliving.com)

(AMV) Over the years I've learned that "urban granola's" (those of us who try to live the natural food lifestyle) don't get sick. Instead we are "CLEANSING". My snotty nose couldn't be a plain old cold...it's my endocrine system cleansing;-))) Anyway, at one point we (our health food stores) began recommending certain cleansing programs for weight loss. Check out this article on that very subject:
Years of poor dietary habits and an influx in the use and ingestion of an increasing amount of harmful chemicals have left tens of millions of people with far too many toxins in their body, a phenomenon which can be especially harmful to the liver.
The good news is there are ways to essentially "detoxify" your liver, and in doing so, greatly enhance your overall health, as well as the functioning capacity of the liver itself.
According to Stanford University's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, "the liver regulates most chemical levels in the blood and excretes a product called bile, which helps to break down fats, preparing them for further digestion and absorption." But when your body is consistently exposed to harmful chemicals and substances, the liver takes a beating and, quite frankly, is unable to perform at peak capacity.
A liver cleanse is one of the best ways to lose weight. Cosmetic and physical reasons aside, slimming down to your body's peak weight is always a good thing, in terms of health, and a liver detox is a great way to cut the extra pounds.
"Many people are unaware that the liver is highly instrumental in the breakdown of fat. In every respect, the liver is just as essential to weight loss as are the intestines and the stomach," says the Global Healing Center. "The liver produces bile, which is used by the digestive system in the breakdown of fat. When you cleanse your liver, you help it promote the production of bile, which will in turn assist your body in metabolizing fats. If you are serious about losing weight, then a liver cleanse should definitely be placed at the top of your priority list."
Liver stones - keep them at bay. These appear in your liver where there is too much cholesterol in the body. The cholesterol then causes bile to harden into crystalline stones that can then create blockages, thus inhibiting the liver's ability to rid the body itself of toxins and return nutrients to the body.
Liver detoxification can rid your body of up to 300 of these "stones" at one time.
As the liver goes, so goes your body. Detoxifying your liver will essentially detoxify your entire body, so it makes sense that in order to detoxify your body, it is best to begin with the organ that is actually responsible for body detoxification.
"The liver is the gateway to the body and in this chemical age its detoxification systems are easily overloaded," says LiverDoctor.com.
Liver detox will give you an energy boost. Purifying your liver will do for you what other people drink coffee or other unhealthy "energy" drinks for - give you a boost of vigor to make you more mentally alert and productive throughout your day.
"The liver is an organ of transmutation. By this, we mean that it changes one substance into another," says Global Healing Center. "Liver cleansing will restore this proper supply of nutrients to the body and noticeably increase your energy for exercise and daily activities."
Do you want to look - and feel - younger? Removing toxins from the body's ultimate toxin filter will cause your skin to look brighter, healthier and more resilient, as the liver's renewed ability to break down fat will assist you in toning up and feeling better than you have in years.
Okay, so, liver detox: How to do it? Here's one way, using unsweetened cranberry juice, orange juice, water and a few other ingredients:
-- Combine one cup of unsweetened cranberry juice with seven cups of water, bring to a gentle boil, then remove from heat.
-- In a tea ball (or tied-off coffee filter) add 1/2 tsp of ginger, 1/2 tsp of nutmeg and one tsp of cinnamon in the cranberry/water mixture for 15 minutes, then remove.
-- Add 3/4 cup of orange juice and 1/4 cup of lemon juice to mixture and stir, then stick it in the refrigerator.
-- Make sure you weigh yourself before and after your detox.
-- When you wake up, drink one cup of the cranberry mixture. Then alternate the next hour with a full cup of water. Then drink a cup of the cranberry mixture the next hour and water the next hour and so on until you finish the mixture.

Q. I saw you mention Turbinado as a sugar substitute in an earlier post. What is Turbinado and how do I use it?
Debbie K.
A. Turbinado is raw, minimally processed cane (from sugar cane) sugar. It looks like brown sugar (light brown in color) except the grains tend to be a bit larger. Also FYI, brown sugar is actually refined white table sugar that has been treated with molasses.
Turbinado has not gone through any of these processes. Turbinado is usually great for baking because its moisture content is higher than refined white or brown sugars.
More importantly due to less refinement, Turbinado has much higher mineral and trace mineral levels than refined white or brown sugars. Make no mistake, Turbinado is still -SUGAR- but being from a more natural source our bodies (insulin levels) can usually handle it better.
Turbinado is relatively inexpensive and can usually be found on the shelves of your local health food store.

You'd think that if the low-carb diet craze taught us anything, it's the importance of protein. But even if you haven't eaten a hamburger bun since the late '90s, it doesn't necessarily mean you're getting enough of what typically goes between the bread.
Recently, the diet pendulum has swung in favor of counting calories—an effective weight-loss tool, but not one that always prioritizes protein. "Many women perceive foods that are rich in protein as being high in calories or fattening," says Laura J. Kruskall, Ph.D., R.D., director of nutrition sciences at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. This isn't the case, but diehard counters know that most proteins will cost you a few more calories than fruits and veggies will.
What's more, protein isn't as portable as other foods. The best sources—fish, meat, dairy, beans—aren't as quick or convenient as most carbs or even fruits and veggies. "Traditional protein sources aren't usually grab and go. And if they are, they're often fried or unhealthy," says nutrition expert Angela Ginn, R.D., a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.
That may help explain why up to a third of women between the ages of 20 and 40 don't get their RDA of protein, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And in light of the fact that a growing number of nutritionists believe that the current dietary guidelines for this mighty macronutrient are way too low, we're really missing out.
Consider this: A Johns Hopkins University study found that a diet in which roughly a quarter of the calories (about 60 percent more than the recommended 10 to 15 percent) come from lean protein sources reduced blood pressure, LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels, and triglycerides better than a traditional higher-carb diet. Other research finds that diets rich in protein can help prevent obesity, osteoporosis, and diabetes.
The Power of Protein
The moment it leaves your fork, protein starts winnowing your waistline. High-protein foods take more work to digest, metabolize, and use, which means you burn more calories processing them. They also take longer to leave your stomach, so you feel full sooner and for a longer amount of time. The cumulative effect has obvious benefits for anyone who is watching her weight.
In a study published in Nutrition Metabolism, dieters who increased their protein intake to 30 percent of their diet ate nearly 450 fewer calories a day and lost about 11 pounds over the 12-week study without employing any other dietary measures.
And if, like most successful dieters, you're burning calories as well as counting them, protein is doubly essential for making sure you lose fat, not muscle. Your body uses the amino acids in protein to build lean muscle, which not only makes you stronger and more toned but also fries calories even when you're not active—unlike lazy fat. Ultimately, this keeps your metabolism humming along at high speed so you can burn off the occasional cookie, no problem.
Pump It Up
Experts advise consuming between 0.5 grams and 1.0 grams of protein per pound of your body weight. That's 70 grams to 140 grams a day for a 140-pound woman. Skew on the high end if you're very active, and on the low end if you're trying to lose weight. If both apply, shoot for an amount somewhere in the middle—around 130 grams.
Even more important: Aim to get at least 30 of those grams at breakfast, says Donald Layman, Ph.D., a professor emeritus of nutrition at the University of Illinois. (That's roughly the amount you'll get from two eggs and a cup of cottage cheese.) After fasting all night, your body is running on empty and may start drawing on muscle tissue for fuel if you don't replenish its protein stores first thing in the a.m. Plus, studies have found that protein-rich breakfasts can help regulate your appetite all day.
But not all proteins are created equal, says Kruskall. While nuts, whole grains, and veggies technically count, they don't contain all nine of the amino acids your body needs in order to build lean muscle. Those that do—known as complete proteins—are typically found in animal products. Your best flat-belly bets are skinless white chicken or turkey, seafood, low-fat dairy, pork tenderloin, and lean beef. All of these foods have just one to three grams of fat per 50-calorie serving.
Vegetarians need to be a little more creative. Pairing incomplete proteins—peanut butter on whole-wheat bread, or brown rice and beans, for example—can pinch-hit for complete ones. Or nosh on complete proteins such as tofu, hemp seed, buckwheat, and quinoa. The beauty of protein is that with so many tasty options, getting your daily dose is a simple pleasure.
Protein to Go
You can't carry a grilled chicken breast around in your purse, so try these more portable options.
Jerky
(1 ounce = 9.4 grams)
Try beef or turkey—both make a flavorful snack.
Roasted Soy Nuts
(1/4 cup = 17 grams)
They're a nice break from the usual peanuts and cashews.
Protein Powder
(a 4 1/2-tablespoon scoop = 16 grams)
Keep a canister of Whey To Go protein powder at your desk for a quick protein fix. It comes in four flavors, mixes well with calories per serving.
Energy Bars
(1 bar = 10 to 12 grams)
Pack a few Luna protein bars (190 calories, 12 grams protein) or Honey Stinger protein bars (190 calories, 10 grams protein) in your bag.
Hard-Boiled Eggs
(1 egg = 6 grams)
Cook a dozen, stick them in the fridge, and grab one when you need a high-protein snack or want to add protein to a meal. Another option: Buy Eggland's Best hard-cooked peeled eggs. Because Eggland's hens are fed organic grain, their eggs have 10 times more vitamin E and three times more omega-3 fatty acids than other brands.
String Cheese
(1 stick = 8 grams)
Pair some low-fat string cheese (80 calories each) with an apple and a few crackers for a filling snack that will easily hold you over until your next meal.

The black mamba is the longest, fastest, and most poisonous snake in Africa, and its venom is a ferocious neurotoxin that paralyzes and kills small animals. According to French scientists at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology in Nice, though, this venom also contains a natural painkiller so powerful that it puts morphine to shame.
The researchers, whose report was published in the journal Nature, were investigating the venom of approximately 50 species of snakes before coming upon the black mamba's painkilling compound, a peptide called mambalgin. Unlike morphine, which is addictive and contains side effects such as muscle twitching, migraines, brain fog, and vomiting, mambalgins contain few if any side effects due to the different routes by which they block sensations of pain.
"When it was tested in mice, the analgesia was as strong as morphine, but you don't have most of the side-effects," said Dr. Eric Lingueglia, co-author of the study. "It is the very first stage, of course, and it is difficult to tell if it will be a painkiller in humans or not."
Dr. Nicholas Casewell, a snake venom expert at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, admits that it is "really odd" that the black mamba venom contains pain-killing compounds. He suggested that mambalgins might work in conjunction with other toxins contained in the venom to "prevent the prey from getting away." It is also possible that the peptide affects different animals in different ways.
"It's very exciting, it's a really great example of drugs from venom, we're talking about an entirely new class of analgesics," he concluded.
Natural origins, unnatural results
Despite the questionable means by which the scientists discovered the effects of mambalgins (animal testing), their revelation is significant because it highlights, once again, the natural origins of many allopathic drugs.
Although Big Pharma would like us to believe otherwise, a lot of their best-selling drugs are derived from natural sources that are far cheaper and safer to utilize in their uncorrupted form. One of the main ingredients in the popular painkiller aspirin, for example, is salicylic acid, a compound derived from the salicin contained in white willow bark. Similarly, many throat lozenges are made from licorice, a natural painkiller. And of course there's morphine, which is made from a compound found in opium poppies. If Dr. Lingueglia's team finds that mambalgins work just as effectively on humans as they do on mice, it's possible that these peptides will find their way into up-and-coming painkillers as well, despite the harm this might do to ourselves (and, indeed, the black mamba population).

FREEZING LEMONS - WHO KNEW
Amazing frozen lemons. All it is.....is a frozen lemon.
Many professionals in restaurants and eateries are using or consuming
the entire lemon and nothing is wasted. How c
an you use the whole
lemon without waste?
Simple.. place the washed lemon in the freezer section of your
refrigerator. Once the lemon is frozen, get your grater, and shred
the whole lemon (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top of your
foods.
Sprinkle it to your vegetable salad, ice cream, soup, cereals,
noodles, spaghetti sauce, rice, sushi, fish dishes, whisky.... the
list is endless.
All of the foods will unexpectedly h
ave a wonderful taste, something
that you may have never tasted before. Most likely, you only think of
lemon juice and vitamin C. Not anymore.
Now that you've learned this lemon secret, you can use lemon even in
instant cup noodles.
What's the major advantage of using the whole lemon other than
preventing waste and adding new taste to your dishes?
Well, you see lemon peels contain as much as 5 to 10 times more
vitamins than the lemon juice itself. And yes, that's what you've
been wasting.
But from now on, by following this simple procedure of freezing the
whole lemon, then grating it on top of your dishes, you can consume
all of those nutrients and get even healthier.
It's also good that lemon peels are health
rejuvenators in eradicating
toxic elements in the body.
So place your washed lemon in your freezer, and then grate it on your
meal every day. It is a key to make your foods tastier and you get to
live healthier and longer! That's the lemon secret! Better late than
never, right? The surprising benefits of lemon! Lemon (Citrus) is a
miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It
is 10,000 times stronger
than chemotherapy.
Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories
interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge
profits.
You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon
juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant
and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy.
How many people will die while this clo
sely guarded secret is kept, so
as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large
corporations?
As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes.
You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice
press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, et
c. It is credited with
many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on
cysts and tumors.
This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say
it is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as
an anti microbial spectrum against bacte
rial infections and fungi,
effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood
pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and
nervous disorders.
The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of
the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than
20 laboratory tests since 1970,
the extracts revealed that It destroys
the malignant cells in 12 cancers, including colon, breast, prostate,
lung and pancreas. The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times
better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used
chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells.
And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon
extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect
healthy cells.
So, give those lemons a good wash, freeze them and grate them. Your
whole body will love you for it!!!!!

If you want to be the best, look like a model and lift like a champion then you need to make sure you're taking the right type of protein. If you're like the rest of the world who really just wants to be healthy, you still may want to consider adding a protein supplement to your diet.
The recommended daily intake of protein for healthy adults is 0.75 g of protein per kilogram of body weight, or about 45 to 56 g of protein a day. If you're now realizing you aren't getting anywhere near that amount, it's time to start making protein a staple to your diet.
Protein shakes are a safe way to ensure enough protein, when used as part of a balanced, nutrient-rich diet. These are the five proteins you're most likely to encounter while on your search for the perfect protein:
1. Whey
Whey protein is found in milk and is the most commonly found protein in workout formulas. Whey proteins include antibodies, growth factors and chemicals which help transport nutrients throughout your body. Whey protein digests faster, providing a quick, high peak in blood amino acids. This makes it useful as a pre-workout shake to kick-start protein synthesis, which aids in muscle repair.
2. Casein
Casein protein is the main protein in milk. Casein protein contains amino acids (the building blocks of protein) which promote muscle growth, prevent breakdown and begin the repairing process. Casein protein digests more slowly resulting in a gradual rise in amino acid levels. This helps prevent muscle breakdown during endurance exercise. Casein protein can be used after workouts but is most effective as a meal replacement or when taken before bedtime.
Note: Casein and whey protein are best used on the same regimen as they both prevent muscle breakdown and stimulates muscle repair at different parts of the day.
3. Egg White
The average egg contains 6 g of protein with more than 50 percent coming from the egg white. Egg whites contains all the benefits of the egg including riboflavin, niacin, folate, vitamin B12, calcium, iron, copper, zinc and sodium with only 17 calories. While egg white may seem to easily be the best of the bunch for the average (non-bodybuilder) user, keep in mind eggs contain a high amount of cholesterol. It's important to only consider adding an egg white protein supplement if your diet is low in cholesterol to begin with.
4. Soy
The problem with many of the proteins on this list is they're not vegan friendly. The main source of protein in a normal diet is meat and so vegetarians and vegans have a hard time getting an adequate amount of protein in their diet. Soy protein is one of the completely vegetarian sources able to provide all of the essential amino acids and is free of cholesterol. Soy protein also has a great deal of antioxidant capabilities and is a good supplement for meal replacement.
5. Rice
Rice protein is usually created from brown rice and is completely vegan and gluten free. It's often viewed as the cheaper and more easily digestible form of whey protein. Rice protein has two main disadvantages: it possesses a rather bitter taste and it's not a complete protein, so other proteins must be consumed with it to form a complete protein.
It's important before beginning a protein regimen to consult your doctor or other medical professional. As previously mentioned, protein supplements should be used as part of a balanced, healthy diet.

BEWARE…UNIVERSAL FLU JAB JUST A ROUND THE CORNER!
A Madison, Wisconsin-based vaccine company is about one year away from enrolling a new universal flu shot into clinical trials, according to reports. The vaccine, known as Redee Flu, is said to provide protection against a host of viral strains, and would only need to be administered once every three to five years -- but like all other flu shots currently available on the market, Redee Flu will more than likely also contain a potentially-deadly cocktail of toxic, chemical adjuvants.
For the past few years, vaccine manufacturers in numerous parts of the world have been scrambling to come up with a vaccine that will target multiple strains of influenza, as several recent studies have shown that existing flu vaccines provide little, if any, protection against the flu. Scientists from the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center, and elsewhere are all reportedly racing to get a universal flu jab to market, presumably to stem the compliance fallout that is building due to the failure of existing flu shots.
But will the new shot actually work as claimed, or will it become yet another example of mainstream medical quackery? According to an official company press release, Redee Flu contains a live virus that allegedly cannot replicate, but that triggers "a robust immune response." As anyone with even a cursory understanding of how vaccines work already understands, the immune response triggered by vaccines is a direct result of the adjuvants added to the vaccine solutions.
Aluminum, antifreeze, and petroleum-based toxins are abundant in flu shots
Such adjuvants include things like toxic aluminum-based gels and salts, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) insinuates on its vaccine safety page are safe because aluminum "is one of the most common metals found in nature and is present in air, food, and water." But what this corrupt agency does not explain is that aluminum-based vaccine adjuvants can cause severe neurological damage, including mental retardation and autism.
Other common vaccine additives include ingredients like antifreeze (ethylene glycol), monosodium glutamate (MSG), food coloring, and ammonia. Each of these ingredients is collectively linked to causing central nervous system damage, memory impairment, lowered IQ, bone problems, and cancer, among other conditions. Vaccine adjuvants are also linked to causing food allergies, particularly when they are made with food-based excipients.
Beyond this, there is the simple fact that existing flu vaccines do not work as claimed, and the so-called "science" used to defend their use is politically influenced and fundamentally flawed. If this same "science" is used to show that Redee Flu is safe and effective, in other words, there is a good chance that it actually does not work, and very likely poses the threat of inducing serious side effects.
"[F]lu vaccination is a lot less effective than we have been led to believe," explains Dr. John Briffa in a 2011 article entitled One Way to Prevent Flu: Catch the Flu, which was quoted by Christina England in a recent piece on vaccines for VacTruth.com. "Plus, many individuals need to be vaccinated for one person to benefit. In other words, the vast majority of people who are vaccinated against flu will not benefit."

(AMV) Not all vitamins and dietary supple ments are the same. Many popular supplement brands, in fact, contain artificial additives, synthetic flow agents, chemical colorings, and even imita
tion vitamin compounds that your body does not recognize and cannot fully process. So how can you know whether or not the vitamins and supplements you buy are safe and effective? Here are six helpful tips on what to watch out for when buying vitamins and supplements.
1) Synthetic vitamins. There is a big difference between the natural vitamins found in food and the so-called vitamins added to many popular dietary supplements. Whole-food based vitamins are uniquely bioavailable, and occur naturally in foods, plants, and herbs. Synthetic vitamins, on the other hand, are produced in a laboratory, and may be derived from toxic sources such as coal tar and petroleum.
How can you know the difference? Synthetic vitamins are typically listed on ingredient labels by their isolated names -- ascorbic acid (vitamin C), riboflavin (vitamin B2), and dl-alpha tocopherol acetate (vitamin E) are all examples of synthetic vitamins commonly added to vitamins and supplements, including multivitamin formulas. Sti
ck with whole food-based vitamins and supplements, including those that clearly delineate their being derived from plants or other natural sources.
"In addition to being synthetic, isolated vitamins are missing all their naturally occurring essential synergistic co-factors and transporters," explains the Organic Consumers Association (OCA). "A synthetic vitamin can stimulate a cell's metabolism, but it cannot upgrade or replace the cell's components with superior, better quality elements. The results? A degraded cell." ( http://www.organicconsumers.org/nutricon/qa.cfm)
2) Magnesium stearate. Believe it or not, many supplements, including those made by more reputable brands, contain a flow agent additive that, over time, can actually block the absorption of nutrients into your body. This ingredient is known as
magnesium stearate, and regular consumption of it is linked to the development of a harmful "biofilm" in the intestines that may cause digestive problems.
Despite having the word magnesium in its name, magnesium stearate is not a source of nutritive magnesium. The only reason why supplement manufacturers add the chalk-like substan
ce to their products is to make them easier to process through manufacturing equipment. But the long-term health consequences of ingesting magnesium stearate may not be worth the risk.
3) Titanium dioxide. Another unnecessary additive found in many supplements, titanium dioxide, which is often used as a pigment in vitamins and supplements, comes with its own set f health risks. An untested nanoparticle powder made from titanium bits, titanium dioxide has been linked to causing autoimmune disorders, cancer, and various other diseases. Besides the fact that it belongs to a class of particles known to cause cell damage, titanium dioxide serves no therapeutic purpose whatsoever, which means it does not belong in a health supplement.
"Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen 'possibly carcinogen[ic] to humans,'" explains the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety on its website. "This evidence showed that high concentrations of pigment-grade (p
owdered) and ultrafine titanium dioxide dust caused respiratory tract cancer in rats exposed by inhalation and intratracheal instillation." (
http://www.naturalnews.com/027000_titanium_dioxide_vitamins.html)
4) Artificial colors. Though not as common in more reputable vitamin and supplement brands, artificial colors are still present in many mainstream supplements. The Pfizer-owned brand of
supplements marketed as Centrum, for instance, contain toxic coloring agents like FD&C Blue No. 2 Aluminum Lake and FD&C Red No. 40 Aluminum Lake, both of which are potential neurotoxins. Even children's vitamins like Flintstones Complete contain these and other toxic coloring agents. ( http://www.greenmedinfo.com)
5) Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). If your vitamin or supplement formula contains ingredients like maltodextrin, citric acid, dextrose, vegetable-based fillers, sugars of any
kind, or even synthetic vitamin C (ascorbic acid), chances are it also contains GMOs. Unless specifically stated on the bottle as being GMO-free, a vitamin supplement that is not whole food-based more than likely contains ingredients derived from GMOs.
Soybean oil is often used as a filler in gelcap-based supplements, and is a common source of GMOs. Vitamin E is another common GMO additive typically derived from soy, more than 90 percent of which is of GMO origin in the U.S. Other common GMO ingredients, unless otherwise labeled, include soy lecithin, inositol, choline, vegetable oil, and vegetable cellulose. (
http://www.responsibletechnology.org/docs/Non-GMO-Shopping-Guide.pdf)
6) Irradiation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently prohibits the use of irradiation as a sterilizing protocol for dietary supplements. But this does not mean that every raw ingredient used in dietary supplements is free of irradiation, as suppliers have been caught in the past illegally selling irradiated raw materials. A European Commission study from back in 2002, for instance, found that nearly half of all dietary supplements tested in Europe contained ingredient

NATURAL SUGAR…OK FOR DIABETICS?
Q. A few years ago I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Would the natural sugars that the health food store sells be OK?
Jim M.
A. Usually a “pre” diabetic diagnosis means you are a type 2 diabetic. This is a good thing…type 2 diabetics have far greater control through diet and exercise. It would be wise for you to avoid all refined carbohydrates (sugars) such as candy, deserts, white flour pastas, white rice etc. Your consumption of “natural” sugars needs to be very guarded. In other words, you need to be very careful of your natural sugar intake. Your pancreas probably isn't producing as much insulin as it should. True “natural” sugars are digested slightly slower and have higher mineral value; therefore your insulin can probably keep up with your natural sugar intake more efficiently.
Be careful, sugar today goes by many names (see poster). Sugar is still sugar any way you slice it. Normal folks can handle it OK. Diabetics and “pre” diabetics need to be aware and very careful.

Good news for busy people: you can get just as much health benefit from a series of disconnected bouts of exercise as short as a minute or two each as you can from a single 30-minute workout, according to a study conducted by researchers from Oregon State University and published in the American Journal of Health Promotion.
"Our results suggest that engaging in an active lifestyle approach, compared to a structured exercise approach, may be just as beneficial in improving various health outcomes," lead author Paul Loprinzi said.
"We encourage people to seek out opportunities to be active when the choice is available. For example, rather than sitting while talking on the phone, use this opportunity to get in some activity by pacing around while talking."
The study was conducted on a nationally representative sample of more than 6,000 U.S. adults, all of whom were assigned to wear accelerometers so that their daily activity patterns could be quantitatively measured. The researchers found that participants could be divided into those who were active in short bouts throughout the day - sometimes for as little as a minute or two at a time - and those who were active only in larger bouts, such as for a half-hour or more at a time.
Participants in the "short bouts" group, on average, had lower blood pressure, cholesterol, waist circumference, and rates of metabolic syndrome (a cluster of symptoms associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes) than participants in the "long bouts" group.
There was no significant difference between the groups in body mass index, a ratio calculated based on height and weight. This may provide evidence that body size per se is not the most important measure in calculating overall health, researcher Brad Cardinal said.
"There are inherent limitations in BMI as a surrogate measure of fat and health in general," he said. "People can still be 'fit' and 'fat.'"
Short bouts lead to more activity overall. Notably, the researchers found that people who exercised in short bouts were significantly more likely to actually achieve the federal recommendation of 30 minutes of exercise per day than people who went only for "long bouts;" 43 percent of the short bout group met the goal, compared with fewer than 10 percent of the long bout group.
Rates of metabolic syndrome were equally low among all people who achieved the recommended 30 minutes, whether in long bouts or short.
"You hear that fewer than 10 percent of Americans exercise and it gives the perception that people are lazy," Cardinal said. "Our research shows that more than 40 percent of adults achieved the exercise guidelines, by making movement a way of life."
According to Cardinal, an "active lifestyle" model of exercise is simply more helpful than a workout-based model. It is not only easier to achieve, but easier to stick with as well.
"This is a more natural way to exercise, just to walk more and move around a bit more," he said. "We are designed by nature as beings who are supposed to move."

The mystery surrounding essential oils and their therapeutic value in both physical and emotional healing is truly astonishing, as these 100 percent natural plant and her b extracts have been shown to be highly effective medicines when taken internally, applied topically, and of course, inhaled aromatically. But many people remain unaware of the wide range of health benefits that can be derived from essential oils, and how these earth-based remedies can provide lasting relief from all sorts of ailments.
Definitively, essential oils are aromatic liquids extracted from trees, roots, seeds, shrubs, and other plants that possess an impressive array of therapeutic compounds. These compounds work in multiple ways to relieve pain, clear out nasal and respiratory passages, calm the mind and senses, and boost energy levels, among other benefits. And one of the primary reasons why they work so well is that they contain multiple trillions of tiny molecules that easily enter the body and nourish cells.
"There are approximately 40 million trillion molecules in one drop of essential oil (that's approximately 40,000 molecules for each cell in the average human body)," explains an article on essential oils published in the International Wellness Directory. "They are so small that they enter your body through the skin and go everywhere in your body," it adds; noting that many other therapeutic compounds found in nature have much larger molecules that are not as efficient or effective at entering cells.
Physical and emotional healing with essential oil aromatherapy
What this means aromatically is that essential oils have an incredible ability to enter the body through the lungs and disperse throughout the body in a way that most other medicines are unable to achieve. The neuroscience behind how this works is somewhat complex and still under investigation, but many years' worth of trials and clinical use have shown that aromatic intake of essential oils can help improve mood, eliminate stress, increase energy levels, boost immunity, and relieve pain.
As long as you obtain certified, pure, therapeutic grade or therapeutic grade varieties -- these typically cost more than essential oils that have been cut or otherwise adulterated with cheaper oils and fillers -- essential oils can be safely used aromatically for these and many other purposes. The scent of lavender oil, for instance, is known to help relax the body and mind, while peppermint can help improve mental clarity, reduce fatigue, and increase energy levels.
You can learn more about the benefits of essential oil aromatherapy by visiting the University of Maryland Medical Center's medical reference guide:
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/aromatherapy-000347.htm
Physical and emotional healing with topical essential oil therapy
Beyond aromatherapy, essential oils can also be used topically to treat all sorts of conditions ranging from acne and allergies, to headaches and indigestion. Just a few drops of essential oil applied to the hands, wrists, feet, abdomen, or lower back can provide relief for a number of ailments. Since they are lipotropic, or fat soluble, essential oils pass easily through the skin into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue. In most cases, essential oils can be applied topically on or near areas where relief is needed.
Both lavender and chamomile essential oils can be applied undiluted, and in fact work best this way, while stronger essential oils like cinnamon and oregano typically must be diluted with carrier oils like olive or hemp seed before being applied topically. A general rule of thumb is that most highly-concentrated essential oils need to be diluted to between one and five percent active oil, with the other 95 to 99 percent being the carrier oil.
You can learn more about the topical use of essential oils by visiting:
http://www.anandaapothecary.com/using-essential-oils.html
This helpful use chart also explains which essential oil blends are effective for which conditions, and how best to apply or use the oil: http://www.family-essential-oils.com/essential-oil-use-chart.html
Physical and emotional healing with essential oil ingestion
Though a somewhat rarer form of essential oil use, ingestion is another way to take advantage of the healing properties of essential oils. Only pure essential oils that are unadulterated and sold as dietary supplements should be used in this way, and these typically include traditionally herbal essential oils such as oregano, peppermint, lemon, caraway, and grapefruit. But others like eucalyptus and lavender have also been shown to produce positive results.
Eucalyptus oil, for instance, is a common ingredient in cough medicines, and has been shown to alleviate respiratory ailments when taken orally. A blend of peppermint, caraway, fennel, and wormwood oils has also been shown in a double-blind study to help alleviate digestive disorders far better than the gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD) drug metoclopramide. And peppermint oil by itself is similarly beneficial for treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
New York University's Langone Medical Center has put together a helpful document on essential oils that contains a wealth of additional information about their effective use, which you can access here: http://www.med.nyu.edu/content?ChunkIID=37427

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the primary cause of older age onset partial or sometimes total blindness. Although most common in adults over 50, macular degeneration can occur at any age, though rarely among those under 50.
Macular degeneration mostly affects central vision, forcing people to rely more on less distinct peripheral vision to recognize objects and faces. The macula occupies a small portion of the retina in the back of the eye.
Though small, the macula is the most light sensitive area of the retina, and it permits detailed focus of objects located centrally in the field of vision. There are two classifications of macular degeneration: Dry and wet.
Dry macular degeneration is the most common and least severe. Diminished central vision clarity occurs gradually. It's called dry because there is no capillary leakage in that region of the eye. Wet macular degeneration does involve retina capillary leakage. It's symptoms are usually more severe and worsen rapidly.
Thus far, ophthalmology has little to offer as a remedy for macular degeneration. But ophthalmologists do recommend taking leutin and astaxanthin to slow ARMD's progress or possibly reverse it slightly.
However, recent human clinical research in Italy and Australia has discovered a non-pharmaceutical approach that proved efficacious for improving eyesight with macular degeneration sufferers safely. It is a little pricey though. It's the spice known as saffron.
Saffron is pricier than most other spices because the bulbs must be planted by hand, and the three crimson stigmas or saffron threads have to also be plucked out of each flower by hand.
The Australian clinical trial
The Australian human study was conducted by Sydney University Professor of Neurology Jonathan Stone. Both this study and the Italian research were similar in scope and dosage. And both conducted a more humane approach to double blind placebo studies with a non-toxic remedy than normally.
The study involved 25 macular degeneration sufferers. Instead of depriving a placebo group from a product that could do something for their ailment, the study switched placebo subjects with saffron subjects half-way through the trial unbeknownst to all involved. The daily dosage was 20 mg of saffron.
The whole study was six months long, so each side of the 25 double blind subjects had three months of improved vision with three months of impaired vision. All 25 were tested for neuron electrical conductivity in the macula and retina, and 23 showed significant improvement. Those 23 also reported they could see much better.
Visual improvement began after only two weeks on saffron. When the saffron group was put onto placebos, they complained that their improved eyesight had begun diminishing again. Conversely, those on placebos for the first half of the trial began seeing better after three months of no improvement.
Professor Stone projects that after a year or more ingesting only 20 mg (milligrams) of saffron daily, vision improvements should stabilize without requiring more saffron dosing.
Stone doesn't know exactly how or why, but he became aware that saffron influences the neuron's genetic code to restore its capacity for healing and protecting neuron cells. Neurons are responsible for transmitting electrical signals or impulses throughout the nervous system.
Professor Stone is looking forward to completing animal studies with saffron for other neurological issues like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Then those would go into human clinical trials also.
His results, combined with the Italian study, impressed Professor Stone enough to create his own line of saffron capsules for the market. He qualified it as a safe nutraceutical that shouldn't require any more testing for FDA approval.
Don't mention that it cures macular degeneration and you'll stay out of trouble, mate. Just say it supports eye health (wink).

A.D.D. & AUTISM…A CURE WITHOUT DRUGS???
If you are the parent or guardian of a child with autism, then you already know how difficult it can be to deal with all the erratic outbursts, chronic speech impediments, learning deficiencies, and other behavioral and cognitive abnormalities that so often characterize the condition. But the good news is that a life of treating these symptoms with behavioral therapies and pharmaceutical drugs is not your only option, as certain dietary and lifestyle changes have the potential to greatly alleviate, and potentially even cure, your child's autism naturally. To all the parents out there who are serious about curing their children's autism, and who are willing to commit to going the extra mile to see that their children get the nutrients they need to see real progress, here are some helpful dietary and lifestyle strategies that may prove beneficial in providing relief and healing for your child: 1) Get rid of all processed foods, refined sugars, preservatives, and chemicals. Before starting any drastic new nutritional protocols, it is important to first cleanse your life of the things that are likely exacerbating your child's autistic symptoms. Processed foods, for instance, are typically loaded with refined sugars and flours, chemical preservatives, food colorings, and other additives implicated in causing hyperactivity, learning disorders, and similar autism symptoms. Instead, stick with whole, organic foods eaten raw or cooked fresh, and seasoned with real spices that have not been irradiated or otherwise chemically treated. Fresh, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables; raw and sprouted nuts; and pasture-based meats and raw dairy products without antibiotics are all preferable to boxed or canned foods that have been heavily processed and fortified with synthetic vitamins and other chemicals. 2) Stop using chemicals around your house, yard. Environmentally, it is important to also rid your house of toxic cleaning products. This means replacing things like antibacterial cleaning sprays with natural, herb-based sprays or a mixture of natural vinegar and baking soda. You will also need to scrap the bleach, conventional laundry detergents, dryer sheets, window cleaners, bug sprays, and all other chemical-based household products and replace them with natural varieties. 3) Juice regularly, and chelate (detoxify). Once you have taken these vital first steps, you will want to begin fortifying your autistic child's health through juicing and chelation, or detoxification. Juicing fresh greens, apples, carrots and beets, for instance, and feeding this blend to your child several times throughout each day will help him or her make positives steps towards real recovery. Beets are a natural chelating agent, so it is important to include them in your child's regular diet. Eleni Prokopeas of GreenDivaMom.com successfully healed her son's autism by changing his diet, feeding him fresh juices daily, and giving him natural chelating agents, among other things. Her 10-step plan to healing autism naturally includes the following: • Prepare mentally -- major lifestyle and dietary changes can seem drastic at first, but they are worth it! • Get into action mode -- actively clean out your kitchen, get rid of unhealthy food, cleanse your environment, get rid of appliances like your microwave, etc. • Commit to living a chemical-free, "green" life • Change your diet -- serve your family only organic or chemical-free foods, preferably fresh or frozen to start. Nothing in a box, no processed salt, and only raw or gently-cooked foods. Avoid soy and eat plenty of potassium-rich foods. • Stop trying to address just the symptoms of autism, and instead address the body as a whole • Juice regularly -- greens, carrots, apple juice, and beets are a great place to start • Commit to these lifestyle changes -- No more macaroni and cheese, fast food, soda, non-stick cookware, or chemical cleaners • Chelate -- detoxify your body, fat, bloodstream of heavy metals and chemicals. Supplement with 2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS), use an infrared sauna for sweating and detoxification, take compound minerals and vitamins before and after going in the sauna, drink beet juice, get soft tissue massages, take digestive enzymes, and supplement with natural iodine. • Get therapy, but only after you have already followed these steps • Live fearlessly, and take control of your own health and life Several years ago, Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, interviewed Eleni Prokopeas on the issue of autism. In this amazing Health Ranger Report, Eleni explains in full detail how she cured her son's vaccine-induced autism. Be sure to listen to this life-changing report here: http://www.naturalnews.com 4) Adopt the methods of the Gerson Diet. Part of Eleni's success story involves using many of the dietary and lifestyle methods recommended as part of the Gerson Therapy for treating cancer. The Gerson Institute has some helpful information on its website about both the full-fledged Gerson Therapy and the reduced Gerson Diet, both of which are helpful for detoxifying and healing. You can learn more about the benefits of the Gerson Therapy and Gerson Diet here: http://www.naturalnews.com/038261_gerson_cancer_cures.html Again, be sure to listen to the Health Ranger Report with Eleni Prokopeas for a real-life testament about how autism can be cured through diet and lifestyle: http://www.naturalnews.com You can also visit Eleni's blog at: http://www.greendivamom.com/ Sources for this article include: http://www.foodforthebrain.org http://www.seattlepi.com http://www.newsmax.com http://www.naturalnews.com/035452_autism_vaccinations_children.html

HOMEOPATHIC CURE FOR SHINGLES...MAYBE!
If you've had chicken pox as a child, then you're still carrying the herpes zoster virus in your body, which can become reactivated after many years causing a very painful, burning rash known as shingles. The virus lives in the nerve cells and produces a rash along the nerve pathways, most often on one side or the other of the trunk of the body. Having had chicken pox does not create immunity to shingles; as a matter of fact, just the opposite is true, because the virus enters the body with the chicken pox.
The Mayo Clinic declares there is no cure for shingles and discusses various conventional treatments that may relieve symptoms; however, many only suppress symptoms leaving the patient open to future attacks. Homeopathy has shown to be highly effective in the treatment and cure of both chicken pox and shingles. Additionally, homeopathic remedies are helpful for treatment of shingles produced as the result of either the chicken pox or shingles vaccine.
Homeopathic remedies for shingles
Ranunculus bulbosus is considered the Rolls Royce of homeopathic remedies for the treatment of shingles, according to homeopath, Stephen Messer, N.D. Ranunculus is indicated for shingles when the rash is deeply inflamed accompanied with stabbing pains primarily on the ribcage. The eruptions are often bluish in color.
Rhus tox is one of the more common remedies employed for the treatment of shingles. If Ranunculus is the Rolls Royce, then Rhus tox is the Cadillac of remedies that relieves the fearsome itching and pains accompanying this condition. The rash consists of small, red fluid-filled vesicles or blisters that break when scratched, spreading the infection. The individual will mostly likely be restless, changing positions often seeking relief. Shingles will appear primarily on the left side of the body. Hot baths and warm compresses bring temporary relief.
Iris versicolor is indicated when the rash is worse on the right side of the abdomen and under the right arm. Shingles are often accompanied by abdominal upset or problems with the pancreas.
Arsenicum album is indicated when the patient experiences terrible burning pains along the nerve pathway. Pains are often made better with the application of warm compresses. The individual may be restless, anxious, thirsty for cold drinks, and afraid to be alone.
Clematis erectus alleviates shingles pain that features burning, red blisters that become aggravated at night time and with the application of cold water. There may be urinary tract complaints during an attack of shingles, more clearly indicating the use of this remedy.
Apis mellifica is indicated for treatment of shingles when the rash is bright pink, swollen, itchy and produces stinging pains made better by cool compresses and aggravated by warmth.
Mezereum is indicated for a shingles rash where the blisters are oozing, bright red and made worse by hot applications. The rash is often accompanied by terrible itching made better with the application of cool compresses.

JOINT SORENESS IS A PAIN…EVERYWHERE!
Q. I am 44 yrs. old and love to ride bike and swim. Lately, my knees and elbows have been hurting! What will keep me moving without breaking the bank?
Shelly M. S.
A. The last time I wrote about joint pain, I talked about Glucosamine Sulfate and related products. I am still sold on long term usage of “QUALITY” Glucosamine combined with synergistic, complementary products. I know it is somewhat controversial but I’ve seen it work exceptionally well, too many times to doubt the efficacy and results. The following are some product recommendations with and without Glucosamine that will keep you on your bike and won’t break the bank:
1. Buried Treasure JOINT EASE: This is a liquid (16 oz) Glucosamine formula containing over 13 powerful ingredients. It’s an effective liquid base containing important minerals to promote joint mobility and connective tissue re-building. Sells for between $25.-$35. per bottle.
2. Bio Nutrition JOINT WELLNESS: This has no Glucosamine in the formula. They use Type 2 Collagen as a formulation base. This is designed to strengthen ligaments and tendons, reduce pain and discomfort caused by inflammation. 60 caps. sell for between $29.-$35. per bottle.
3. Tiger Balm PAIN RELIEVING PATCH: This is a ventilated, hydrogel patch designed for long lasting release and comfort. This is a topically applied analgesic patch that sticks to the applied area. This has either 4 or 5 patches per box and sells for between $6.-$9.
While at home follow these up with frequent ice packs applied to the aching joint. I would do either #1 or #2 (not both at same time) and use #3 anytime.

THE MIGHTY PINEAPPLE...WHO KNEW!
The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family. It is extremely rare that bromeliads produce edible fruit. The pineapple is the only available edible bromeliad today.
It is a multiple fruit. One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of individual floweret's that grow together to form the entire fruit. Each scale on a pineapple is evidence of a separate flower.
Pineapples stop ripening the minute they are picked. No special way of storing them will help ripen them further. Color is relatively unimportant in determining ripeness. Choose your pineapple by smell. If it smells fresh, tropical and sweet, it will be a good fruit. The more scales on the pineapple, the sweeter and juicier the taste. After you cut off the top, you can plant it. It should grow much like a sweet potato will.
This delicious fruit is not only sweet and tropical; it also offers many benefits to our health. Pineapple is a remarkable fruit. We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it may also be one of the most healthful foods available today. If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find that pineapple is valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis. The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms.
Let's look at how pineapple affects other conditions.
Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount. It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple's value. Proteolytic means "breaks down protein", which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently. Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory. Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis. It also produces mild pain relief.
In Germany, bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.
Orange juice is a popular liquid for those suffering from a cold because it is high in Vitamin C. Fresh pineapple is not only high in this vitamin, but because of the Bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucous in the throat. If you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet. It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous after certain sinus and throat operations.
Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.
Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and others who may be at risk for blood clots.
An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice. it really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often make a difference.
It's also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR…GOOD FOR WHAT?
Q. My Grandmother took apple cider vinegar most of her life. I have to admit she rarely got sick and always stayed thin. Do you think it was the vinegar or just her constitution? Alanzo A.
A. Gramma was a wise woman and her lifetime of good health could certainly be attributed to Apple Cider Vinegar. For the majority of the 38 years I was in the natural food business Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) was always one of the top 10 selling items in the entire store. Its history of medicinal use goes back into ancient Greece where Hippocrates was recorded as using ACV to treat patients. Its popularity continues ever stronger today fueled by the fact that it works. ACV’s ability to stabilize our body’s acid alkaline balance opens the door to a whole host of benefits. Here are the top 10 benefits: Source: wikipedia.com
Anti-inflammatory: • The anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar work to help internal inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract when added to salads or taken diluted with water. • Aids with weight loss: • By regulating blood sugar levels, apple cider vinegar also assists in weight loss. Insulin will not direct sugar to be stored as fat • Clears skin: • Apple cider vinegar is astringent and is an antiseptic. It helps with acne and pimples. • Gets rid of dandruff: • The fungus Malassezia furfur, which causes dandruff, is eradicated by the antifungal properties of apple cider vinegar. • Helps with Arthritis: • Apple cider vinegar has potent anti-inflammatory properties and helps with pain of the joints. • Lowers glucose in diabetics: • Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which can slow down starch digestion. This will help lower glucose levels in the bloodstream. • Lowers bad cholesterol: • The presence of pectin in apple cider vinegar helps reduce bad cholesterol in the body. • Rich in minerals: • Potassium, magnesium and many other minerals are in apple cider vinegar. Potassium controls the water balance in the body. Magnesium helps with digestion. • Protects against cancer: • Apple cider vinegar contains beta-carotene, which according to the Mayo Clinic possesses antioxidant properties that counteract damage caused by free radicals. ACV protect against cancer and boost the immune system. • Yeast Infection: • Apple cider vinegar reduces yeast infections in women by adding 2 tbsp. of the vinegar to a douche. This remedy should be taken with caution.
Always buy “organic” ACV and make sure the “mother” or sediment is still in the mix. The “mother” looks like a cloud in the liquid and it’s where most of the nutrient (vites. and minerals) are held in the mixture. ACV should be amber in color, always refrigerate after opening and shake well before every use. AMV

Broccoli has always been regarded as one of the most essential vegetables for health and nutrition not only because it is nutrient-packed, but because several studies have already demonstrated its ability to fight off cancer. But according to more recent studies, the cancer preventing properties of broccoli can become a double threat against cancer when combined with broccoli sprouts.
Johns Hopkins introduces the anti-cancer benefits of sprouts
It was the Johns Hopkins research team who first explored this vegetable's fighting compounds. And the team was able to zero in on the phytochemical sulforaphane content of broccoli that makes it effective against cancer. With continuous study, the team also found out that the sprouts possess more amounts of antioxidants and provide greater protection against cancer. This has encouraged sprout growers everywhere.
University of Illinois study says broccoli combo is a double threat against cancer
A recent study from the University of Illinois proves; however, that eating broccoli or the sprouts alone may give much nutrition. But in an effort to boost the anti-cancer effects of the vegetable, both the mature broccoli and the spouts have to be consumed. One of the researchers and professor of nutrition at University of Illinois, Elizabeth Jeffrey explains, to be able to maximize the benefits of broccoli's anti-cancer component, sulforaphane, the enzyme myrosinase is required. This is because the enzyme obtained from the sprouts increase the absorption of sulforaphane in the body. Hence, as the study concludes, eating broccoli in both forms can double the cancer preventive effects of this green. The University of Illinois team studied the blood levels of the male participants in the study. The participants were divided into three groups. The first group were fed with meals containing broccoli alone. The second group consumed broccoli sprouts only. And the third group was served both. Out of the three groups, it was the third group of male participants who proved to have nearly 50 percent more sulforaphane in their system based on their blood tests. This is certainly good news. It serves as another reminder to pay attention to eating your share of greens.
More cancer prevention recommendations
Aside from eating broccoli powder with sprouts, there are other food items that can possibly boost the cancer fighting properties of the vegetable. For example, wasabi, radish, mustard and arugula. The University of Illinois research team also suggests steaming instead of microwaving broccoli for around two to four minutes to get the most of the enzyme and maximize the cancer preventive properties of the green vegetable. Needless to say, this research has spurred renewed interest in home kitchen sprouting. To see the latest in home sprouting technology go to www.eFoodDehdratorsPlus.com and click on sprouters. OBSCURE BUT VITAL NUTRIENT…
Q. What should I do to increase my Asparagine levels?
Dylan C
A. You know, sometimes I think I have heard it all, but…I gotta tell ya…I have done this (provided nutritional info.) for almost 40 years and in that time nobody has ever…EVER asked me about the amino acid L-ASPARAGINE. Congrats. Dylan, you take the prize.
Asparagine is a non-essential amino acid (a piece of a protein molecule) which means that we don’t have to derive it from our food, our bodies produce enough normally. Way back in the 1800’s it was first detected in asparagus, hence the similar name. We now know that it is the chemical breakdown of Asparagine in our body that causes our urine to smell odd after eating asparagus. It is one of the 20 most common amino acids and our bodies need very minute doses of Aparagine to be healthy. This “adaptogen” amino acid seems to indirectly affect our nervous system, equilibrium and over-all amino acid transformation within our bodies.
As stated above it is found in asparagus. It can also be found in larger amounts in dairy, beef, poultry and eggs. You can increase your Asparagin levels (not sure why you would want to…) by taking a full range amino acid supplement such as Carlson Labs. AMINO BLEND 750 mg. capsules. There are a small number of online amino acid retailers that stock Asparagin, isolated by itself in a capsule and it’s relatively inexpensive.

PREPPER FOOD DEHYDRATOR
If you are a doomsday preppe r just waiting for the coming apocalypse then you no doubt have your “bug-out-bag”, compass, iodine pills, hand crank radios and even a solar power flashlight. Now, you need the most important item of all, your “prepper” food dehydrator. A prepper food dehydrator can be one of several commercially available off-the-shelf food dehydrators. Or your prepper food dehydrator can be a (non electric) solar powered model. This solar prepper food dehydrator will most likely be a food dehydrator that you made at home using over-the-counter building materials. Either way, your prepper food dehydrator will soon become you most valued piece of post apocalyptic survival equipment.
To the average joe, today’s doomsday prepper may seem a bit extreme, even paranoid. But to the thousands who follow the discipline and lifestyle the seriousness of their intent can be seen and experienced through various media. It doesn’t take long to realize that one of the biggest issues following a serious, down-to-earth prepper is food. A prepper food dehydrator will allow for the dehydration or drying of a huge array of foods from fruits and vegetable garden stock to various forms of red meats. Many preppers have found that their prepper food dehydrator will even dry fresh picked beans and lentils. The protein sources such as meat and beans become life sustaining when placed in a survival situation. Your prepper food dehydrator can even be used to dry various fruits and greens which can then be ground into a sustainable powder. This prepper food dehydrator derived powder can then be added to other foods or liquids for added nutritional value.
In a survival situation one of the biggest uncertainties is the availability of electricity. Most commercially purchased prepper food dehydrators require an electricity source. In the event of no electricity many preppers have purchase gas or propane driven generators. A prepper food dehydrator pulls very little electrical wattage. Therefore a generator should be ideal for the use of a prepper food dehydrator. The other scenario would be the possibility of no electricity. A home built, solar, prepper food dehydrator would be ideal. Appalachian State Univ. Technology Program has designed a basic solar, prepper food dehydrator that meets and exceeds all of the preppers criteria. It consists of a homemade solar panel or collection box connected to the drying box. These are connected with air flow tubes and the entire solar, prepper food dehydrator is positioned above the ground on four wooden pedestal legs. If you are interested in seeing the schematics for this solar food dehydrator it can be found posted in a PDF form by Doug Sharkey, of the Organic Growers School.
Whether you are preparing to hunker down for the oncoming apocalypse or just trying to do something with the excess bounty from your garden, your “prepper” food dehydrator will become a valued and protected piece of equipment. Your ability to store large amounts of dehydrated foods (no refrigeration needed) from you prepper food dehydrator will prove to you that this valuable machine will pay for itself many times over. For the largest and most complete selection of inexpensive food dehydrators and prepper food dehydrators check out the selection at www.eFoodDehydratorsPlus.com.

HOW MUCH WATER DO I HAVE TO DRINK?
Q. I try to drink as much pure (bottled) water through out the day as I can. Do I really need as much water every day as they say?
Elizabeth N.
A. Did you know that “every” single physical function of your body requires water? Water makes up 60 % of your body weight and water is the single most abundant element in our bodies. Water not only flushes out toxins but provides vital nutrients to every cell of your body. You can probably see where I am going with this answer. Yea…drinking WATER (not just fluid) throughout the day is vitally important for your basic and over-all health.
How much water we should drink seems to be up for debate and may depend on the individual. Most of us have heard the “8 by 8 rule”. That is 8 oz., 8 times per day. This will provide almost 2 liters of water. The Mayo Clinic is recommending that men get at least 3 and women 2.2 liters of water daily. As you might guess your bodies demand for water increases as your activity level increases.
Please be aware that 2 out of every 5 bottles of water sold world wide is nothing more than purified tap water. You may have heard that there is a huge debate going on right now about the water origin (source) and wording on the bottle. Dasani Water (owned by Coca Cola) is the latest perpetrator. For more information on this see my blog at www.eFoodDehydratratorsPlus.com/blog.
Yes, drink as much “clean” water as possible through out your day. If the plastic bottle (toxin leaching) is an issue, switch to a metal bottle. Soft drinks don’t count, coffee and tea (within reason) does count.

As more and more people wake up to the dangers of fluoride, chlorine, pharmaceuticals, and the many other toxic compounds found in municipal water supplies, the market for bottled water has exploded. But in the process, some major food and beverage corporations have unwittingly begun peddling that very same tap water in bottles as "pure," a deceptive labeling term that is the subject of a new trade controversy in Europe. According to a recent report by Occupy Monsanto, the Dasani water brand, which is owned by beverage giant Coca-Cola, is one such bottled water counterfeit, if you will, that contains purified tap water dressed in fancy-looking bottles. Like many other bottled water brands, Dasani is sold at a premium price, and many people perceive it to be superior to tap water, even though it actually is just tap water. Even though the majority of the impurities have admittedly been removed from Dasani water, and minerals added back in, many people do not realize that the water contained in Dasani bottles is not actually from a natural spring. If you read closely the labels found on water bottles, it usually spells out the source where the water inside was derived. But this information is often overlooked by consumers who believe they are buying something superior. "Figures from independent beverage research company Canadean show that at least two out of every five bottles of water sold around the world are, like Dasani, 'purified' waters, rather than 'source' waters which originate from a spring," explains Trevor Datson in an Occupy Monsanto piece. "Most of the supermarket own-label bottled waters consist of treated mains water. In short, they are subjected to many of the same treatments that source waters undergo to satisfy public health requirements after being pumped up from the ground." The significance of this is that water specifically derived from a natural spring actually is superior to the water supplied by the local tap, at least in most cases. Many people who buy bottled water assume their water comes from a spring, because this is how the bottled water industry got its start. But today, brands like Dasani, Aquafina, and Sparkletts have captured significant market share by engaging in what some would called deceptive advertising. Back in 2007, PepsiCo Inc., which owns the Aquafina "purified" water brand, announced it would begin printing the words "Public Water Source" on its labels to ensure that customers knew where Aquafina water actually came from. The move came in response to several nationwide campaigns launched at that time to combat deception in bottled water labeling. HISTORICAL TRIVIA...
Sometimes a healthy interlude needs to be taken. I find this historical trivia to be fascenating...ENJOY:
Did you know the saying "God willing and the Creek don't rise" was in reference to the Creek Indians and not a body of water? It was written by Benjamin Hawkins in the late 18th century. He was a politician and Indian diplomat. While in the south, Hawkins was requested by the President of the U.S. to return to Washington . In his response, he was said to write, "God willing and the Creek don't rise." Because he capitalized the word "Creek" it is deduced that he was referring to the Creek Indian tribe and not a body of water.
In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint)
As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig... ' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.
In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal.. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.'
Personal hygiene left much room for improvement.. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . .. . Therefore, the expression 'losing face.'
Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in 'straight laced' wore a tightly tied lace..
Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades...' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck..'
Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to 'go sip some Ale and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.
At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the phrase 'minding your 'P's and Q's'.
In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem....how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey; Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.)

IP6 KILLS PROSTATE CANCER?
The sobering fact is that one in six men will be affected by prostate cancer at some point in their lifetime, as nearly a quarter of a million are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Although many men can live a normal lifespan as long as the disease remains localized, the cancer can become aggressive as it spreads to other organs and ranks as the second leading type of cancer killer. A number of lifestyle factors including poor diet and lack of exercise cause malignant cells to leave the prostate and travel to remote parts of the body. Any natural intervention that prevents the deadly spread of tumor cells could help save the lives of many thousands of men each year.
A research team from the University of Colorado Cancer Center has published the result of their study in the journal, Cancer Prevention Research that explains how a high-fiber diet may have the clinical potential to control the progression of prostate cancer in patients diagnosed in early stages of the disease. Scientists observed that the incidence of prostate cancer is similar among Asian and Western societies, yet the rate of disease progression is much higher in Western men, leading to a significantly increased death rate among this population.
IP6 from a high-fiber diet halts tumor vessel formation to halt prostate cancer growth
Researchers developed a mouse model to test the influence of inositol hexaphosphate (IP6), a major component of high-fiber diets, on the progression of prostate cancer tumors and subsequent malignant growth. Mice with existing prostate cancer were divided into two groups. The first group was fed a standard diet with the addition of IP6, while the second group received the same diet and served as a control group.
The lead study author, Dr. Komal Raina noted "The study's results were really rather profound. We saw dramatically reduced tumor volumes, primarily due to the anti-angiogenic effects of IP6." Scientists determined that the bioactive compound kept prostate tumors from making the new blood vessels they require to supply themselves with energy. Without this energy, prostatecancer can't grow. Additionally, they found that the cancerous tumor cells metabolized glucose at a much slower rate, inhibiting their ability to grow from their preferred fuel source.
Dr. Raina concluded "Researchers have long been looking for genetic variations between Asian and Western peoples that could explain the difference in prostate cancer progression rates, but now it seems as if the difference may not be genetic but dietary. Asian cultures get IP6 whereas Western cultures generally do not." Boost your natural intake of IP6 and fiber by adding six to ten servings of fresh vegetables, fruit and legumes to your daily diet to significantly lower the risk of prostate cancer and most other forms of cancer.

FOOD COMBINING...GOOD FOR QUALITY OF LIFE?Q. So, what is the latest on food combining? Do people still do it and is it beneficial?Karen T.A. Food combining as a way of improving health and even loosing weight seemed to peak the late 1980's. Most folks find "hard core" food combining too exclusionary and rigid to be practical for everyday life.In theory, lumping (combining) your food into separately digested groups makes sense. Our bodies do digest different food groups in different stomach (or bowel) areas at different times of the day.Practically speaking, its just too hard of a dietary practice to maintain for the long term. Most folks to whom I talked could maintain the diet for a week or two, then human nature takes over. I personally feel that God never meant for basic human nutrition to be such a burdensome process. To have to think and worry about what you can and cannot eat when combined with each other is eroding the quality of life.AMV

BITTER MELON...GREAT FOR BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION! About 6 years ago Bitter Mellon began popping up in many of the natural blood sugar supplements. Many of us working in the health food stores at the time had never heard of it. Several of our hypoglycemic customers were overjoyed. They quickly showed us their Diabetes Today newsletter and New Eng. Journal of Medicine where Bitter Mellon research was published. The research for hypoglycemics was very conclusive and outright astounding. For diabetics, it was good but still needed further studies. Once again, this poster gives a quick, easy to read and understand overview of Bitter Mellon. Remember, it can be purchased "in formulation" in supplement form. These pills are usually marketed for Blood Sugar regulation.

HOMEMADE FOOD DEHYDRATOR
It can honestly be said that there is nothing new under the sun. The use of the sun as a food dehydrating method has been used for centuries. Archeological records of a homemade food dehydrator can be traced all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. There, amongst the building of the pyramids are the remnants of the earliest known homemade food dehydrators known to man. Even back then they recognized the superior preservation, lightweight convenience and lasting flavor that this homemade food dehydrator could provide. Today, your homemade food dehydrator can become a valued member of your healthy kitchen arsenal.
The food dehydrator is actually a very simple machine providing a very basic yet important function within your house hold. Your homemade food dehydrator is essentially the same as mentioned above only it is designed and constructed by you. The main body of a homemade food dehydrator can be assembled from just about any box or cylinder like container. The variety is dependant only on your imagination but it does have to be heat and fire resistant. To accommodate this, a thick layer of aluminum foil may be layered throughout. Your homemade food dehydrator can be constructed from a simple corrugated box to a more complex wooden or metal assembly container. This homemade food dehydrator needs to be able to have doors that close tight and an inner tray configuration for food to be laid out. These trays need to be porous or a screen like grid for even and complete heat and air flow. A homemade food dehydrator will also need a heat source. This heat source can be either a heating coil or a heat rod. In order to disperse this heat and remove any moisture a fan will have to be affixed to your homemade food dehydrator. A fan is not really required for your homemade food dehydrator although without it the dehydrating process may take twice as long without it.
As with any homemade piece of equipment, safety is paramount. There are several safety and convenience measures you will have to comply with in order to have a safe and effective home food dehydrator:
1. Underwriters Lab (UL) listing on all units or electrical parts (including homemade food dehydrators.
2. Non-flammable walls and trays.
3. Properly wired, grounded, enclosed electrical components.
4. Smooth edges and corners.
5. Non-toxic paint, screening, finishes.
6. Adjustable thermostat (85 to 160 degrees F.).
7. Easy to reach switches and controls.
While the above requirements may seem daunting, they are universally accepted as “the basics” when thinking about either a homemade food dehydrator or purchasing a dehydrator from the store. While a homemade food dehydrator may seem practical and economical, in today’s commercial / retail environment your ability to purchase a food dehydrator that meets all of your needs is greater than ever before. Your homemade food dehydrator may cost from $50.00 to $200.00 to find and assemble the parts discussed above. A standard, store purchased food dehydrator either box or cylinder design will most likely run between $30.00 and $400.00 depending on construction and capacity. For the largest selection of food dehydrators anywhere on the planet go to www.eFoodDehydratorsPlus.com.

CINNAMON & HONEY...WHO KNEW?
Drug companies won't like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mix of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also note honey as very effective medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects which is also a plus.Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Researched by western scientists:
HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, put it on toast instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol and could potentially save one from heart attack. Also, even if you have already had an attack studies show you could be kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of cinnamon honey strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins. ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients can benefit by taking one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken daily even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain -- and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.
BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder....who knew?
CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol-could be cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.
COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and, clear the sinuses, and it's delicious too!
UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also is said to clear stomach ulcers from its root.
GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.
IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles (where DNA is contained) to fight bacterial and viral diseases.
INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals
INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural 'Ingredient' which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.
LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Use four teaspoons of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of boiling water to make a tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans increase and even a 100 year old will start performing the chores of a 20-year-old.
RASPY OR SORE THROAT: When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.
PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.
SKIN INFECTIONS:Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin Infections.
WEIGHT LOSS:Daily in the morning one half hour beforebreakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.
CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder three times a day for one month.
FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, even when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, when taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M., the vitality of the body increases within a week.
BAD BREATH: People of South America, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water first thing in the morning so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.
HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing.

ELDERBERRY...DESTROYS FLU VIRUS!
If you are looking for an efficient, safe and cost-effective treatment to battle cold and flu, elderberry supplements can be an excellent choice this winter. Studies have shown that elderberry extract has been efficiently used to prevent and treat influenza A and B virus infections.
Elderberry has been used in folk medicine for centuries to treat influenza, colds and sinusitis, and it has been reported to have antiviral activity against influenza and herpes simplex. Many elderberry supplements have been top selling items in health food stores, particularly oral black elderberry syrup, highly rated for its efficacy and safety. However, beware of eating elderberries raw. Raw elderberries contain a chemical similar to cyanide.
Sambucol, a formulation of black elderberry syrup, has the ability to help people get through cold and flu. Many users have reported that elderberry was able to minimize flu severity and shorten illness when taken as soon as flu symptoms appeared. Elderberry contains antioxidants called flavonoids which can stimulate the immune system, as well as a compound called anthocyanins which contain an anti-inflammatory effect. A study published in the Journal of International Medical Research shows that the majority of flu patients given Sambucol were completely symptom-free after just two days of taking the supplement. Moreover, elderberry syrup products can be given to children with no side effects or negative interactions.

LIVING FOOD DEHYDRATOR
Who wouldn’t want to eat the most “alive” food possible? Most of the world’s population…that’s who. The term living food could be (but doesn’t necessarily have to be) synonymous with raw foods. For the majority of folks who attempt to live by eating only “alive” foods this entails consuming only foods that have not been cooked and are in their original state. All of the original live food enzymes are still intact. This lifestyle usually equates to a vegetarian or vegan dietary existence. Food dehydration through the use of a living food dehydrator is not only a vessel of convenience but becomes a life giving necessity. If you are truly practicing the discipline of eating only living foods then your living food dehydrator is your life line for food preservation and consumption.
A living food dehydrator is in reality no different than any other normal “of the shelf” food dehydrator. The only difference is that this machine is used to dehydrate only living (raw) food vegetation. Your living food dehydrator will most likely be either the insulated box design with interior drawer trays. Or secondly, the living food dehydrator design may assume the cylindrical, stackable tray shape. The quality of the finished product from both forms of living food dehydrators is completely dependant of two constants. These universal constants for your living food dehydrator will always be 1. Even air flow 2. Reliable heat source. The basic principles of either shape or design of a living food dehydrator should work essentially the same. That is, a constant flow of hot air is blown through and around the internal chamber of the living food dehydrator. This heated air flow needs to be the same temperature and velocity throughout all areas of the internal chamber of your living food dehydrator. The outcome of both forms (box or cylinder) of living food dehydrators should be the healthiest, most enzyme rich morsel of dried fruit or veggie that is possible.
Your living food dehydrator should be used for vegetable matter only. While the use of a food dehydrator for the creation of various forms of meat jerky is hugely practiced, your living food dehydrator should preferably remain fruit and vegetable exclusive. The reasons for this can vary from sterilization issues to ethical / moral concepts and beliefs. For practical sterilization your living food dehydrator should be cleaned and sterilized regularly after each usage. If meat was used on the same trays as your living foods then sterilization becomes more important and difficult. Each tray of the living food dehydrator is porous and contains a screen grid design. Raw meat of all types will always leave a bacteria residue in, around and through each hole where the meat may come into contact. Cleaning and sterilizing these areas can be cumbersome and difficult.
Each living food dehydrator performs a unique role within the individual or family it services. These living food dehydrators are designed to last for many years and your whole family can safely participate in each and every aspect of the living food dehydrator lifestyle.

Flu season typically peaks during January and February according to the U.S. government's Department of Health and Human Services. Now's the time to boost your immune system to optimum levels to fight colds and flu, speed up recovery and easing symptoms.
These are the main reasons many people get winter colds and flu:
1) We're indoors with other people while windows and doors are tightly closed. 2) The viruses causing most respiratory infections are continually mutating. Our immune systems have difficulty responding to these ever-changing germs. 3) Viruses typically survive on non-porous surfaces for hours. For example, If you turn a door handle recently touched by a sick person, then inadvertently lift your hand to your nose, you've infected yourself. 4) Respiratory viruses, especially Influenza, become airborne when someone coughs. You only need to inhale a very small amount of the airborn virus to become sick. Common symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and cough, though they are usually mild and gone within a week. However, Flu (Influenza) is not as common as colds. The two main types of Influenza viruses "A " and "B" cause most cases of the flu. The Influenza viruses spread in the air and direct contact. Flu symptoms are usually debilitating, characterized by sudden onset of chills, fever and muscle aches.
Keep Drinking Warm Liquids Including Herbal Teas and Soup Broths
When you come down with a cold or the flu, your respiratory system works hard to expel the invading viruses via mucus. Rather than drying those mucus secretions with OTC antihistamines, it's better to accelerate the healing process by thinning them and making it easier to expel them. The best way to thin mucus secretions is to add water to your system by drinking warm liquids, especially herbal teas and clear soup broth. Take a hot, steam shower, inhale through your nose if you're stuffy, or through your mouth for chest congestion. Include aromatherapy by use de-congesting, anti-microbial herbs including eucalyptus, thyme, rosemary or peppermint leaves. A warm bath can relax aching muscles and ease chills. add five to eight drops of plant essential oils For muscle aches, try juniper and ginger.
Supplementing Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs
Some people who use Vitamin C users report a reduced duration and severity of cold symptoms, indicating that it plays a role in respiratory defense mechanisms. Typical daily doses are 500 to 1000 milligrams a day. Eating Vitamin C-rich foods, such as peppers, blueberries, citrus fruits, strawberries and leafy green vegetables provide good benefits. Vitamin C helps promote a healthy immune system, as well as vitamin A, beta carotene, potassium, zinc and selenium.
Natural Nutritional Remedies for Colds and Flu
Certain herbs are beneficial to help decrease the severity of colds and flu while aiding your body's healing process.
Echinacea is the most-researched herb for enhancing immune defenses and to help prevent respiratory tract infections. Several studies support the use of Echinacea for the treatment of viral upper respiratory infections. The American Botanical Council noted recent studies concluding that Echinacea helped reduce the duration and incidence of the common cold. Most experts say that when an Echinacea is taken in adequate and frequent doses at the onset of symptoms, it can shorten the duration and severity of a cold. Based on new research, it may also be helpful to start echinacea if you've been exposed to someone with a cold and should be taken every two hours while symptoms persist.
Sambucus is better than Elderberry, a traditional European tea brewed with elder flowers and peppermint leaves. However, scientific research has focused specifically on the berry from the black elderberry tree (Sambucus nigra). The extract of
Sambucus black elderberries produces beneficial immune actions and helps fight influenza and other respiratory viruses. Several studies have demonstrated rapid recovery from influenza with Sambucus extract
Ginseng including either Eleuthero Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), American
ginseng (P. quinquefolius) and eleuthero (Siberian ginseng or Eleutherococcus senticosus) all have been reported useful in fighting respiratory viruses. Such immune enhancing herbs especially helpful for elderly people. Ginseng is one of the most recommended cold and flu remedies by herbal experts.
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) also has many properties that can relieve
cold and flu symptoms. It acts as a mild anti-inflammatory, demulcent (soothing to sore throats), antispasmodic (to relax coughs) and expectorant to expel respiratory mucus. Herbalists recommend not to take licorice for more than four to six weeks. It causes kidneys to retain water and sodium while losing potassium. Don't take it at all if you're pregnant, have high blood pressure or low blood potassium.
Healthy lifestyle factors influence your immune function... To avoid getting sick, eat healthy foods. Be sure to emphasize whole grains,
fruits and vegetables in your diet. Try to sleep at least eight hours a night. Wash your hands often, and sneeze into your arm, not your hands. Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, which delays respiratory defenses, and only drink alcohol to a minimum because excessive amounts affect immunity. Exercise regularly, but moderately. If you come down with a cold, light exercise is beneficial and can help clear respiratory mucus. If you have a fever, be sure to rest.

Women who ate at least three servings of blueberries and strawberries each week had fewer heart attacks. Blueberries and strawberries contain high levels of natural nutritive compounds that have cardiovascular benefits. Eating three or more servings of blueberries and strawberries per week may help women reduce their risk of a heart attack by as much as one-third, research scientists reported in the professional publication Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. Blueberries and strawberries contain high levels of naturally occurring compounds defined as dietary flavonoids; They're also naturally-present in grapes and wine, blackberries, eggplant and other fruits and vegetables. The specific class of flavonoids (known as anthocyanins) are believed to help dilate arteries, helping prevent the buildup of plaque and provide a range of cardiovascular benefits, according to the study. "Blueberries and strawberries can easily be incorporated into what women eat every week," explained researchers of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass. "This simple dietary change could have a significant impact on prevention efforts."Blueberries and strawberries are the most-commonly eaten berries in the United States. Other fruits, berries and vegetable foods could provide the same benefits and healthful results, the researchers said. Scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States and the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom conducted a prospective study among 93,600 women ages 25 to 42 who were registered with the Nurses' Health Study II. The women completed questionnaires about their diet every four years for 18 years. During the study, 405 heart attacks occurred. Women who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had a 32-percent reduction in their risk of heart attack compared to women who ate the berries once a month or less -- even in women who otherwise ate a diet rich in other fruits and vegetables. "We have shown that even at an early age, eating more of these fruits may reduce risk of a heart attack later in life," confirmed the research team from the Department of Nutrition at Norwich Medical School of the University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom. The findings were independent of other risk key factors, such as age, high blood pressure, family history of heart attack, body mass, exercise, smoking, caffeine or alcohol intake. The American Heart Association supports eating berries as part of an overall balanced diet that also includes other fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products. Eating a variety of these healthful foods is the best way to assure the proper levels of the specific dietary flavonoids (anthocyanins).

Need another reason to choose whey protein over soy when trying to preserve and build lean muscle mass? A new study (1) from McMaster University in Canada found that when compared to whey protein, ingesting soy protein after a workout or at rest does about as much as plain water for muscle protein synthesis.
The study randomized 30 elderly men into three treatment groups to test the effects of ingesting 0 grams of protein, 20 grams of soy protein, or 40 grams of soy protein at rest and after a bout of resistance exercise. These effects were then compared to previous responses in similar aged men who had ingested 20 grams or 40 grams of whey protein at rest and after resistance exercise.
Results showed that rates of muscle protein synthesis for ingesting 20 grams of soy protein were no different than ingesting 0 grams of protein. The higher dose of soy protein, 40 grams, only modestly increased rates of muscle protein synthesis after exercise in comparison to people who consumed no protein.
In contrast, previous data from the study authors showed that consuming whey protein at rest and after exercise has shown to induce muscle protein synthesis whether in a dose of 20 or 40 grams, with the larger dose having a greater effect.
“We report that soy protein isolate is relatively ineffective in its capacity to stimulate MPS [muscle protein synthesis] in the elderly when compared to whey protein,” wrote the researchers.
The findings from this study should speak to aging adults who are looking to avoid the muscle-wasting effects of sarcopenia, as protein source and dose are showing more and more to be critical in avoiding age-related muscle loss. Even though both whey and soy proteins are considered high-quality proteins based on the digestibility of their amino acids, and both are considered ‘fast’ proteins because they cause a rapid increase in amino acids available to be utilized by muscles, the actual digestion and muscle-building potential of whey and soy protein are quite different.
For one, whey protein has a higher percentage of the amino acid leucine, which has shown to be the “master” amino acid for the synthesis of muscle. What’s more, the current study found that a greater proportion of soy’s amino acids—including leucine—are diverted towards oxidation, making them unavailable for muscle synthesis. This goes along with the findings of prior studies (2, 3) that revealed the amino acids contained in soy protein are metabolized in the body by gut proteins. The amino acids in whey protein, on the other hand, are partitioned for use by skeletal muscle tissue—leading to greater rates of muscle synthesis. To top it off, soy protein products do not usually exceed 20 grams per serving and research is showing that we need closer to 30 grams of protein per meal (4).
Whey protein is not just for older adults looking to preserve their muscles. Whey protein has shown to be superior to soy in increasing muscle protein synthesis after exercise in young adults too (5). #whey protein #soy protein #protein powder #best protein powder #amino acids #master amino acid #muscle mass

Research scientists at Florida State University, discovered that a specific pathway in the hippocampus (a brain region involved in memory formation and regulation of stress
responses) plays a significant role in mediating testosterone's effects, according to a new report in Biological Psychiatry.
Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression compared to men. Men with a condition known as hypogonadism, in which the body produces no or low testosterone, also suffer increased levels of depression and anxiety.
Testosterone replacement therapy has been shown to effectively improve mood.
It is important to fully characterize how and where the effects are occurring so that scientists can better target the development of future antidepressant therapies.
To achieve this goal, the scientists performed multiple experiments in neutered adult male laboratory subjects. They developed depressive-like behaviors that were reversed with testosterone replacement. The researchers also identified a critical molecular pathway called MAPK/ERK2 (mitogen activated protein kinase/ extracellular regulated kinase 2) in the hippocampus that plays a major role in mediating the protective effects of testosterone. This suggests that the proper functioning of ERK2 is necessary before the antidepressant effects of testosterone can occur. It also suggests that this pathway may be a promising target for antidepressant therapies.
It's interesting to note the beneficial effects of testosterone were not associated with changes in neurogenesis (generation of new neurons) in the hippocampus as it does with other antidepressants like imipramine (Tofranil) and fluoxetine (Prozac)."

RAW FOOD DEHYDRATOR
The modern vernacular use for the descriptive adjective “raw” is describing something that has been stripped down to its most basic form. When thinking in terms of a raw food dehydrator we are not referring to the actual food dehydrator itself but to its use and ability with raw, uncooked foods. In other words a raw food dehydrator is one in which raw, uncooked foods can be dehydrated (dried) for preservation and consumption. These foods can range from a variety of red meats to countless varieties of fruits and vegetables. Using this raw food dehydrator will ensure maximum nutrient preservation, maximum taste and much longer storage periods.
Probably one of the most popular uses of your raw food dehydrator is the drying and preservation of red meat. Meat in its raw form (uncooked) is not only un-palatable but can be dangerous to consume due to naturally occurring bacteria. Our bodies have a very limited ability to breakdown and digest raw meat. Because of these limitations raw food dehydration is especially popular with game hunters. After bagging a deer the hunter has a limited time to process this deer (venison) meat before it goes rancid and spoils. Taking this raw food (venison meat) and placing it into your raw food dehydrator can turn it into succulent venison jerky which can last a measured time without refrigeration. For long term storage of meat products from your raw food dehydrator, refrigeration, vacuum sealing or salt immersion is still recommended. Implementing your raw food dehydrator soon after the kill and using these preservation methods will guarantee that your dried meat will remain nutritious and tasty.
The concept of the raw food dehydrator is probably most appreciated and exercised by anybody practicing a non-meat, raw food lifestyle. This variation of a vegetarian or more specifically vegan lifestyle is one in which the raw foodist will commit to consuming only foods that are non-animal based and completely un-cooked. When attempting to maintain this lifestyle your raw food dehydrator takes on a whole new image and meaning. This individual will need to be able to use the raw food dehydrator as a very important tool for food preparation primarily because the life giving nutrients are preserved intact but the moisture has been removed. Cooking your food will always deplete nutrient value, especially in the more delicate fruits and vegetables. Using the raw food dehydrator retains these nutrients and allows the food to be stored indefinitely. One of the main important aspects of your raw food dehydrator is the ability to dry a large variety of fruits and vegetables in the shortest period of time. Storing these foods will also be enhanced with your raw food dehydrator due to the removal of the moisture. The fruit or veggie will be much lighter in weight therefore storing large quantities in small spaces is achieved.
Your home food dehydrator is essentially what you make it. It can be an efficient raw food dehydrator or it can be use in a variety of other ways. I Just want to pass along some very interesting and timely information concerning a little known herb. The Dr. Gary Null Institute of Natural Medicine has re-released a study (1987) about the immune enhancing properties of BLACK CUMIN. The original study done at I.I.M.E.R. in Panama City Florida showed a -72% - immune system strengthening (T-cell ratio) when applied to the test group!!!
With the worldwide overuse of antibiotics and HIV researchers scrambling to find a more effective drug cocktail, BLACK CUMIN EXTRACT deserves to be studied further. As a matter of fact Dr. Hwyda Arafat from the Kimmel Cancer Center has been rigorously studying Black Cumin in relation to pancreatic cancer. Dr. Arafat says “the results thus far are astounding…with an 80% cancer tumor cell death!” Dr. Arafat goes on to say that Nigella Sativa (Black Cumin) may help fight a variety of diseases including colon and prostate cancer.
When purchasing Black Cumin you need to find the “organic”, cold pressed oil extract. Mix one to three teaspoons daily with honey before breakfast. Fresh garlic may be added to deeper enhance the immune response. #black cumin #immune support #nigella sativa #black seeds

SOLAR FOOD DEHYDRATOR
The concept of using the sun to dry or dehydrate your food for preservation is not a new one. Using the sun’s drying power to form a solar food dehydrator has been un-earthed by archeologists in the diggings of ancient Mesopotamia. The rudimentary concept of the solar food dehydrator resurfaced again in 1684 with French author Alexandre Exquemelin’s book The Buccaneers of America. In which he describes the buccaneers (pirates) constructing a buccan or wood drying frame for meat on the island shoreline. These early solar food dehydrators were primarily used to dry and preserve sea cow and wild pig meat. While the concept of the solar food dehydrator is not a new one, recent research and modern engineering design has refined this ancient concept of food preservation.
A solar food dehydrator is of course one in which no electricity is present and the drying power of the sun is harnessed, directed and concentrated. The concept of using no electricity to achieve a palatable, well preserved food item is especially relevant in today’s world. The solar food dehydrator will most likely show up within the confines and paranoia of the doomsday prepper to the desperation of the relief worker in a country trying to re-build after a natural disaster. There a hundreds of solar food dehydrator designs however, without exception they all follow the same basic principles solar heat collection and heat dispersion. Despite the wide array of solar food dehydrator designs there are several important elements to consider when selecting the right design for you and your family:
1. It must dry food relatively quickly in your environment.
2. It must be easy to use, particularly in terms of loading, unloading and cleaning.
3. It must be easy to move around, set up and store away.
4. It must be durable and sturdy.
5. It must have a built-in venting control for temperature and air flow.
6. It must be relatively weather resistant.
7. It must be as pest proof as possible.
Appalachian State Univ. Technology Program has designed a basic solar food dehydrator that meets and exceeds all of the above criteria. It consists of a homemade solar panel or collection box connected to the drying box. These are connected with air flow tubes and the entire solar food dehydrator is positioned above the ground on four wooden pedestal legs. If you are interested in seeing the schematics for this solar food dehydrator it can be found posted in a PDF form by Doug Sharkey, of the Organic Growers School.
Despite the universally simple design and basic concept there are still some drawbacks to the solar food dehydrator. Due to much slower heating, your food preparation times for the solar food dehydrator need to be increased. Of course the obvious drawback would be the ability to use the solar food dehydrator only when the sun is out. Both of the above issues would require planning. The final drawback to the solar food dehydrator would be the different taste of the dried product compared to when it was fresh. This may take some getting used to. While the solar food dehydrator has its place in history and today’s world, the standard, electric, kitchen friendly food dehydrator is still the food dehydrator of choice for most folks. The best selection and pricing of food dehydrators can be found at www.eFoodDehydratorsPlus.com.

COMMERCIAL FOOD DEHYDRATOR
The term “commercial” always brings up visions of large machinery in a factory setting. This machinery may be pumping out huge volumes of product to supply some massive demand. While there are some instances of commercial food dehydrators that match the above description, the reality is that even your humble, home food dehydrator (that is most likely setting in your kitchen) could qualify as a commercial food dehydrator. In other words, you could be making money by turning your little home machine into a commercial food dehydrator.
Dehydrator ovens that are designed to be used as commercial food dehydrators are usually large, room size (possibly walk-in) containers with sanitizable shelving, walls and flooring. These commercial food dehydrators are designed to produce high volume product in the shortest possible time frame. These producers are able to do this through high volume production using superior heat source and evenly distributed air flow. These commercial food dehydrators are most likely going to be supplying a national or international need of dehydrated fruits, vegetables and meats. These end products are being used in retail outlets for snack food sales, food additives and possibly bulk food supplies to developing nations. Your kitchen food dehydrator can become a commercial food dehydrator by simply and intelligently supplying a need. Your output and volume will of course be far less than the above mentioned commercial food dehydrators but your end result will be nonetheless satisfying.
All that you really need to turn you home dehydrator into money making commercial food dehydrator is the basic machine. Your own personal commercial food dehydrator can be any one of the displayed models available on the open market. These food dehydrators are usually an insulated box or cylinder container. Within this container would be your perforated, product (drying) shelves, an insulated (protected), coiled heat source and at least one or more air flow fans. The next basic requirement would be an inexpensive supply of raw material. This raw material could ideally be your excess garden pickings. It could also be a very inexpensive supply source such as a local farmer with more product than he can sell. In many cases this farmer will implement a u-pick series of days where you can obtain a large amount of raw fruits and veggies for a very small price. The only other real requirement for your commercial food dehydrator business is a demand for your dehydrated products. Demand for healthy, low fat, tasty snack food is nearly universal. Some local outlets for the bounty from your commercial food dehydrator would be local craft fairs, flea markets, church bazaars, roadside markets and even local specialty retail stores. Many home entrepreneurs have even set up store front web sites to sell there commercial food dehydrator created products. The extent of your imagination is the only limitation to recognizing the demand for your commercial food dehydrator created product.
Several things to keep in mind for your commercial food dehydrator venture would be the following; packaging (plastic bag thickness, air-tight seal etc.) requirements, state and federal food packaging labeling requirements and finally your local and state health department requirements for product re-sale. Don’t let these details discourage you. Turning your favorite machine into a commercial food dehydrator can be a fun and rewarding experience.

NATURAL ALTERANATIVES TO FLU SHOTS!
Q. None of my family got flu shots this year and now (of course) the flu is stronger than ever all over the nation. Its in the news every time I turn on the TV. I am starting to get worried. Is there any natural alternatives to flu shots?
Donald G.
A. Actually the natural food industry is full of safe and “effective” supplements that can either act as immune boosters (prevention) or intervention (suppression) products for colds and flu. The following would be my pick for supplements to boost your immune system to prevent getting sick altogether:
1. American BioSciences IMMPOWER AHCC Immune System Support. This product (capsules) supports and boosts metabolic cellular immune function. Immpower AHCC has also been shown to promote optimal T-Cell and Macrophage activity.
2. Buried Treasure PREVENTION AFC. This “liquid” (16 oz.) is an advanced, comprehensive formula specifically designed to insure optimum immune support. Prevention ACF is designed to promote the body’s natural defense system fighting both bacterial and viral infections.
3. Irwin Naturals IMMUNO-SHIELD All Season Wellness. These liquid filled soft gel capsules are a Dr. formulated potent multi-herb complex that specifically addresses two key areas, immune support and bacterial/viral control. This also contains a potent probiotic (good bacteria) blend.
The following would be my pick for those over-the-counter natural food store products which seem to actually suppress and shorten the duration for cold and flu.
1. Boiron OSCILLOCOCCINUM. Take these sublingual (under the tongue) (Oscillo), as soon as you start feeling run down or have other flu-like symptoms, such as headache, body aches, chills and fever, take Oscillococcinum. Oscillo is supported by published clinical studies, as well as more than 65 years of use throughout the world. Clinical studies show that Oscillo reduces the severity and duration of flu-like symptoms.
2. Broericke & Tafel ALPHA CF. This homeopathic formula temporarily relieves fever, chills, sneezing, stuffed-up nose, runny nose, coughing, sore throat, headache, minor aches and pains. that may accompany colds. Contains no Antihistamines.
3. Buried Treasure ACF (Acute Cold & Flu). This 16 oz. “liquid” combines high quality herbs and nutrients to support a healthy immune system, creating thin potent fast-acting formula for relief during the cold and flu season.
Please understand, none of these are miracle producing, over-night cures. They require commitment and consistency on your part. Time and time again I have seen these formulas work for folks who are seriously trying to avoid getting sick and have chosen to forgo the flu shot.

VITAMIN D-3...GOTTA HAVE IT! Back in the early 1980's when we began our health food stores, researchers were warning everybody to be very careful of taking too much vitamin D. They were saying that too much of this "fat soluble" nutrient could damage your health. They couldn't have been more wrong. Present day research is showing that adequate (relatively high) levels of Vite. D-3 is not only healthy but required for even basic metabolic functions. Soak in the info. in this poster. It's a good one. #vitamin d #vitamin d-3 #fat soluble #sun vitamin #sun nutrient

Q. I saw you message about Xylitol. I hear that tupelo honey is good to for diabetics also is this true? Please let me know.
Chris A.
A. “Actual” Tupelo honey is produced only in the Northwest regions of Florida. Other regional or imported honey may say Tupelo but is actually an inferior honey blend. Pure Tupelo honey has a light amber golden color with a slight greenish cast. This honey is a choice table grade honey with a delicious flavor and with a delicate distinctive taste. Honey produced from only the White Tupelo is the only honey that will not granulate when left sitting on the shelf. Due to its high laevulose (44.3%), low dextrose (29.98%) ratio (average), doctors have been able to recommend some diabetic patients to consume Tupelo Honey. The keyword is “some” diabetics. If you are an insulin (injecting) diabetic then you still need to stay away from Tupelo honey. If your diabetes is nutritionally controlled then small measured amounts of Tupelo would most likely be OK.

Are you a hiker or camper? Are you on-the-road in your car or truck many hours of the day? Are you a hard working mom who just needs a healthy snack but doesn’t want to give in to the sweet stuff? Do you suffer from diabetes or hypoglycemia and need a high protein / low fat snack throughout the day? If you see yourself in any of these examples then you are one of the many people who could greatly benefit by using your food dehydrator for beef jerky. This practice started as early as the 1600’s when the buccaneers (pirates) would food dehydrate (sun dried) fish, beef and sea cow hide along the island shoreline. Food dehydrating beef jerky continues to this day with some of the best quality meat slices being produced right out of your own home food dehydrator.
Food dehydrating beef jerky can seem a little intimidating at first. You may be accustomed to dehydrating the fruits and veggies out of your garden, but food dehydrating raw beef! That is a whole different animal (no pun intended). Actually, you needn’t worry, and don’t be afraid to try something new and healthy such as food dehydrating beef jerky. The benefits far out weigh the risks. If you follow these simple steps then your food dehydrated beef jerky should turn out and taste just fine:
1. Slice about 3 pounds of raw lean beef into very thin slices about 6 to 8 inches long. Cut against the grain and be sure to slice off as much fat as possible. At this point, your delicious food dehydrator beef jerky is only hours away.
2. Make a marinade for your food dehydrator beef jerky. This can be as simple as the following; ¾ cup soy sauce, ¾ cup Worcestershire sauce, 1 tbsp. of salt, 1 tbsp. of minced garlic and always include some pepper.
3. Place the marinade and the sliced beef in a resealable gallon plastic bag. Gently squeeze the bag to spread the marinade over all the beef.
4. Refrigerate the beef and marinade over night. Turn the bag occasionally to keep all the beef covered with marinade.
5. Drain the beef.
6. Oil the racks of your food dehydrator with cooking spray. Place the beef strips on the racks and put the lid on or shut the chamber door of the food dehydrator. If your dehydrator has a temperature setting, set it at between 145 and 150 degrees. Or, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
7. Check the beef periodically. It can take from 2 hours as long as 12 hours to dehydrate, depending on the thickness of the beef and your food dehydrator. It's finished when the meat has turned very dark and is pliable.
8. Store the food dehydrator beef jerky in resealable plastic bags in the refrigerator or freezer. Microwave frozen beef jerky for about 30 seconds.
Once completely dried, your food dehydrator beef jerky will keep just fine in an un-refrigerated environment. Step 8 is simply to ensure that freshness and food safety is guaranteed in your food dehydrator beef jerky. After the dehydrating process, always thoroughly clean and sanitize the drying trays and inner chamber of the food dehydrator being sure that all the beef residue, bits and pieces have been removed. Enjoy your food dehydrator beef jerky…one of the healthiest snacks on the planet.

Who would not want the best quality product for the hard earned money you have to spend? When it comes to shopping for the best food dehydrators this term “best” is in my opinion irrelevant. The best quality food dehydrator is going to be the one which produces the best end result. That is, the best food dehydrators will be the ones that fully dehydrate the highest volume of fruits, veggies or meats. This best food dehydrator should do this in the shortest period of time while at the same time leaving the most flavors in each and every cut of dried, succulent morsel.
Food dehydrators come in various shapes and sizes. Irregardless of the size or shape, the best food dehydrators are the ones that have the most complete and evenly dispersed air flow. Along with air flow the best food dehydrator will also have the most even temperature throughout the encased box or cylinder. Maximum air flow and evenness of projected temperature will always produce the best quality dehydrated fruits, veggies and meats. In order to achieve this goal the best food dehydrators are going to have either under carriage or back wall spacing of their fans. In the best food dehydrator these fans will be evenly spaced to provide full compartment coverage. This needs to be achieved irregardless of the placement and volume of drying material which will be placed on the trays. The best food dehydrators are also going to have a steady and constant heat source. In the best food dehydrators this heat source will house only the most reliable electronic components. This heat source coil will also be positioned to achieve the greatest heat displacement in relation to the fans to ensure that the best food dehydrator will always have superior air and heat flow.
The best food dehydrators will also have an outer shell made of solid state material which will not warp, chip or fade after multiple uses. With today’s superior metallurgy and plastics technology the outer shell as well as the inner trays of the best food dehydrators will be made to stand the test of time as well as allow for proper air flow thus creating a superior dried food. The best food dehydrators will be manufactured by companies that are not afraid to stand by their product. The manufacturers warranty will have parts and labor coverage for any factory original part. They will also make it as easy as possible to contact them in the event that you may have a question concerning the manufacturing and operation of their best food dehydrator.
The best food dehydrators will offer an assortment of accessories such as temperature control devices as well as timers. Several companies which manufacturer the best food dehydrators will also have creative added accessories such as jerky guns, tray liners and even recipe books. The companies that manufacturer the best food dehydrators want you to succeed in making the best product possible by offering you the best possible equipment.

Xylitol has actually been around since the 1960’s and is a naturally occurring sugar of which we get very small amounts in the fruits and vegetables we eat. Ironically most manufactured Xylitol is derived from either wood (trees) or corn cobs. It is widely used throughout Europe and is being used extensively in the U. S. as a diabetic friendly sweetener. Xylitol is very slowly absorbed therefore fewer calories and carbohydrates are ingested. Additionally and more importantly the body does not require insulin to metabolize Xylitol. Other than its non-insulin producing properties a couple other somewhat odd but nonetheless great features of Xylitol are the following:
1. FIGHTS PERIODONTAL DISEASE (fewer cavities). Xylitol , being plat derived does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Xylitol also prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth. This is how it protects the teeth from tooth decay.
2. SINUS AND NASAL RELIEFE. Xylitol helps prevent the harmful bacteria that cause upper respiratory infections from sticking to the tissue, if they can’t stick to the tissue, they can’t cause infection. Xylitol helps the body’s natural cleansing process to clear away allergens, asthmatic triggers and harmful bacteria.
Xylitol is more expensive than white table sugar but tastes great and can be purchased from most health food stores. The manufacturer Xlear Inc. makes a variety of Xylitol products including granulated powder, nasal spray and even mints. Personally, I still prefer more basic (unrefined) sugar. My personal choices would be honey, sucanat (raw cane sugar), granulated maple sugar. However Xylitol has been an answer to prayer to many diabetics.

CHEAP FOOD DEHYDRATORS
The very term “cheap” food dehydrator leads one to think of a product where the manufacturer has implemented in-expensive and cost cutting method of manufacturing. In this case, they have made a shoddy and inferior (cheap) food dehydrator. In the world of food dehydrators “cheap” could be considered a relative term since the quality of the food dehydrator is ultimately determined by the quality of the food after you have dehydrated it.
For all practical purposes there are two major food dehydrator designs, the square box and the round cylinder. Irregardless of the food dehydrators shape, air flow is what will determine an inferior cheap food dehydrator from a quality food dehydrator. In a cheap food dehydrator the air flow will not be equal on all tray levels. The cheap food dehydrator usually will have ample air flow close to where the motor and fan produces the heated flow. In this instance, with a cheap food dehydrator the first two, maybe three trays of sliced foods will be properly dried where the remaining food trays will still have too much moisture still in the flesh of the food. These of course would be the trays that are the farthest away from the fan and heat source.
Another glaring aspect of a cheap food dehydrator would be the tendency for tray warping due to heat exposure. Within the last thirty years the manufacturers of cheap food dehydrators have sought out various ways to cut costs. One of the major cost cutting methods which can greatly determine a cheap food dehydrator is the usage of low quality plastics. The outer shell of the cheap food dehydrator is usually a heavier gauge plastic with a slightly higher tinsel strength. The plastic used for the internal trays of a cheap food dehydrator are often of a lower grade, thinner gauge and therefore more susceptible to heat warping after only several uses.
Cheap food dehydrators will most likely be manufactured using a bare bones method. This means that the cheap food dehydrators most likely have the least expensive electric motor that can be found on the open market. This motor is vitally important to the over-all function of the food dehydrator as it ultimately determines the air flow. Cheap food dehydrators with cheap motors is almost always a no win situation for the consumer. Cheap food dehydrator motors will most likely burn out due to inferior parts and wiring. Due to manufacturing / replacement costs it is usually better to simply replace the cheap food dehydrator motor rather than attempt to repair it.
Warranties on cheap food dehydrators are all too often written in such a manner as to be very ambiguous as to the actual coverage. It is very difficult to determine what if any part of the cheap food dehydrator is covered. In addition the location of the responsible party is most often a distant third world country or a sub-division of a much larger entity. Either way, the chances of you finding satisfaction concerning a faulty or cheap food dehydrator through the retailer or manufacturer is very slim and in most cases nearly impossible.

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SWEETENER…I told ya so!!
I am really not a “told ya so” kind of person…but…have you seen the recent headlines about HFCS (High Fructose Corn Sweetener)? It is a major sweetener found in just about everything you pick up in the super markets. Food manufacturers love this stuff because it’s cheap (the main reason), stable (can be blended into just about anything), plentiful (manufactured world wide) and flavor neutral (important for sweeteners). Scientists have now (finally) admitted that HFCS is actually altering our brain chemistry. When we have eaten our fill of a food that contains HFCS our brain is telling us “nope…I’m not full yet…I want more!” If your interested in the science and politics behind this research I would recommend two books; SUGAR BLUES by William Duffy and EXCITOTOXINS by Russell Blaylock.
For years, through our chain of health food stores we have been telling folks to be careful of the amount to HFCS they consume. The health food industry (as a whole) has actively adapted other, healthier sweeteners in much of the product inventory. These sweetener alternatives can range from Stevia (now going main stream) to Xylitol (derived from corn cobs) to even coconut sweetener. As you begin this new year by swearing your going to eat better, take a hard look at your soft drinks (even Diet…), gum (believe it or not) and breakfast / protein bars. HFCS can be lurking in the most un-expected places in the ingredient lists.

Q. Mr. Vitamin, I was just diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Diabetes runs in my family so I figured it was just a matter of time. My Dr. wants to put me on Lipitor but I have heard some bad info. about this drug. Any suggestions?
Wayne K.
A. Absolutely! Just because you are genetically predisposed to diabetes doesn’t mean you have to fall into its clutches. Please do the following three lifestyle changes and remember; consistency is the key:
1. Loose weight. I know…this is easy for me to say but so hard to do. At the very least strive to achieve the ideal bodyweight for your height. The healthiest and most efficient way for you to get there is to push yourself in a cardiovascular work out at least 4 times per week. Once you get there you can actually re-set your body’s metabolic fat point by building some muscle mass through weightlifting.
2. Eat more…but less. In other words clean up your diet. Most of us know how, we just don’t have the discipline or desire to do it. Try to eat six smaller meals every day. Make sure the meals are predominately quality protein. Ideally (for blood sugar purposes) your meals should be should be 60% protein, 30% carbs. And 10% fats (good fat). Clean out the kitchen. Don’t even have the bad stuff around to tempt. When you shop at the grocery, shop the perimeter (where the healthy food is) and try to avoid the inner aisles.
3. Take a Pill. But not a statin drug like Lipitor. They work, but the side effects are not fun. Try instead a natural blood sugar supplement that contains at least one or more of the following: Cinnamon Extract, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Bitter Melon Extract and Vanadyl Sulfate. I don’t usually promote specific manufacturers but in this case these guys have the best I have ever seen. Bio Nutrition Blood Sugar Wellness has all of the above and more in exactly the right proportions. If you can’t find this over the counter then try www.eFoodDehydratorsPlus.com and click on Nutritional Supplements. It sells for about $21.95.

I just ran across some great alternative uses for your home and kitchen food dehydrator. How about drying your fruits and veggies and then crushing them into a powder. This powder can then be added to your power shakes, smothies or green drinks. I have sold these green powder drinks in health food stores for years and they go for big bucks. You can save a ton of money by using your food dehydrator to create your raw material for these beverages.

Hi Folks, I happend across this article about some research explaining why broccoli is such a healthy food and cancer fighter.
The Sulforaphane Compound
In Broccoli and Other Cruciferous
Vegetables Is The Key!
Eat Your Broccoli, Cauliflower and Kale To Help Prevent Cancer. Here's Why...
Researchers in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University have discovered a key factor for why the "sulforaphane" compound in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables is so good for you. It provides two ways to prevent cancer through the complex mechanism called epigenetics.
Epigenetics is an increasing focus of research around the world; It refers not only to our genetic code, but also to the way that diet, toxins and other elements can change which genes get activated.
This can play a significant role in everything from cancer to heart disease and other major health issues.
Sulforaphane is one of the most important compounds that provide the health benefits in cruciferous vegetables; Scientists also knew that a mechanism involved was histone deacetylases also known as HDACs. This family of enzymes can interfere with the normal function of genes that suppress tumors. HDAC inhibitors, such as sulforaphane, have the ability to help restore proper balance and prevent the development of cancer.
It's one of the most promising areas of cancer research today. The new Oregon State University studies have found a second epigenetic mechanism called DNA methylation, which plays a similar role.
Researchers explained this one-two punch is important to cell function and the control of cell division. When disrupted, it is a sign of cancer.
"Cancer is very complex and it's usually not just one thing that has gone wrong," the researchers said. "It's increasingly clear that sulforaphane is a real multi-tasker. The more we find out about it, the more benefits it appears to have."
DNA methylation, they said, is a normal process of turning off genes, and it helps control what DNA material gets read as part of genetic communication within cells. In cancer that process gets mixed up. And of considerable interest to researchers is that these same disrupted processes appear to play a role in other neuro-degenerative diseases, as well as cardiovascular disease, immune function and the aging process.
The research was published in the journal Clinical Epigenetics; It primarily studied the effect on prostate cancer cells, but the same processes are probably relevant to many other cancers including colon and breast cancer.
"With these processes, the key is balance" the researchers said. "DNA methylation is a natural process, and when properly controlled is helpful. But when the balance gets mixed up it can cause havoc, and that's where the critical nutrients are involved. They help restore the balance."
Sulforaphane is particularly abundant in broccoli and in other cruciferous vegetables such as kale and cauliflower . Laboratory and clinical studies have shown that higher intake of cruciferous vegetables can aid in cancer prevention.
The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the OSU Environmental Health Sciences Center.

6. Dairy and Milk Are Beneficial In The Right Amounts Too...
I know its hard to believe but dairy products can help stimulate fat loss, especially around the crucial abdominal areas. Not to mention that dairy products are rich sources of calcium, which this natural fat-reducing effect is believed to be due to the fact that calcium regulates the hormone calcitriol. Since calcitrol causes the body to produce fat and inhibit fat burning, it's important to minimize its actions. When calcium levels are adequate, calcitriol and fat production are suppressed while fat metabolism is enhanced. Including low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat milk and plain yogurt to your diet are deliciously satisfying ways to increase healthy protein intake and assist fat loss.

5. Only Eat Certain Oils, Fats...
I'm not bragging but I have not had butter in or on anything in ages. Instead I put flax or olive oil on anything I used to slather butter on. It has the same mouth feel with the added benefit of the heart healthy Omegas. Certain fats (primarily Omega-3s, Omega 6's) do not lead to fat gain and can actually help promote efficient fat loss. Keep your fat intake at 30% of total daily calories by choosing healthy fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, cod or trout, as well as other healthy fat sources such as olive oil, peanut butter, avocados, almonds and walnuts.
Although it appears contradictory, eating specific fat to lose fat is one of the keys to long-term success. You can actually improve fat loss when compared with people following a low-fat diet. Your body and brain needs fat to function properly. Just be sure its the right kind of fat and make it a lifestyle change.

4. Eggs Are Highly Beneficial...
I have always said that eggs have had a bad rap over the years. Eggs are packed with high-quality protein and have been shown to promote muscle strength and mass. The yellow or egg yolk contains some cholesterol. Research shows that the albumin (white) of the egg contains a cholesterol reducing element called lecithin...a perfect balance. Research also shows that people consuming eggs for breakfast actually eat fewer calories throughout the day, while also losing significantly more body fat.
Eat eggs for breakfast daily, either scrambling one to three whole eggs or three egg whites, using olive or flax oil instead of butter. Jazz it up with fresh tomatoes, basil, peppers, onions, etc.

3. Eat Beneficial Citrus Fruits, Especially Grapefruit..
A study from the Scripps Clinic (San Diego) reported that men who ate fresh grapefruit or drank at least 8 ounces of grapefruit juice three times a day lost an average of 4 pounds in only three months, even without changing their diet. Grapefruit's ability to lower insulin levels, thus limiting fat storage is highly beneficial in the battle of the bulge. Experts suggest regularly including fresh grapefruit or pure-squeezed grapefruit juice to your dietary regimen.

2. Eat Whole Grains For Your Carb Intake...
When you want to consume carbohydrates, be sure to choose slow-digesting whole grains including: brown rice, oatmeal, and whole-wheat bread to keep insulin levels low and at steady levels; The objective is to prevent insulin spikes from stopping fat burning (metabolism) and preventing increased fat storage. A study conducted by researcher scientists at Pennsylvania State University found that men or women following a low-calorie diet with carbohydrates originating from whole grains lost significantly more abdominal fat than those following a low-calorie diet with carbohydrates from typically refined sources.

There is no way you can stick with your diet in all aspects and times of your life. Right now, I am on a trip to my home town in Ohio. I come from a small farming town and other than new Subway on Main Street, the only place to eat is the Veterans building next to the Chevy dealer. Believe me, if I went in and ordered a "paleo" friendly meal or a gluten free dish...they would look at me like I just dropped on my head from the rear end of the manure loader. There is no other choice. What I am saying is this; stick with your dietary discipline as best as you can and don't sweat it at those times when there is no way you can walk a firm line. Enjoy the break as best as you can and get back on the wagon as soon as you can and re-dedicate yourself to the cause.
I know this sounds a bit simplistic but I can't tell you how many people I have counseled over the years who worry and fret and get totally stressed out over their in-ability to stick with their regimen. Or they are so disciplined that they just won't eat, therefore making themselves the drama kings or queens for the day.
Stick with it as best as you can and when you can't...deal with it.

I have currently spent what amounts to my entire career in the Health and wellness industry...34 years. I have tried to deal with each and every customer as an individual by using the same mentality and philosophy. Here it is...It is my belief that God never meant for basic human nutrition to be such a burdensome process. In other words keep it simple. Ok...I know, this is easy for me to say and can be daunting when dealing with an increasingly complex (and personal) subject such as health and nutrition. But in this day and age you need honest, simple answers. Feel free to visit my "Ask Mr. Vitamin" Facebook page and post your questions. Please know that these postings will also be shown at my web site www.eFoodDehydratorsPlus.com.

Believe me, after almost 35 years of experience I have seen it all, heard it all and experienced just about anything and everything that any one individual involved in the health and wellness industry could ask for. Ask Mr. Vitamin was actually created over a decade ago by in response to my years of experience in selling vitamins, natural foods, and health and wellness equipment. This blog is going to be alot of me, that is my experiences, my bits and pieces of wisdom I've accumulated along the way. It is also going to include some info. about various products and manufacturers I feel deserve a second look and maybe a comment or two.
I'm sure you noticed the "Ask" in the title. Originally this column began as an email Q & A. It was first published in a health and fitness magazine published in Tampa and distributed nationally. That was before the days of Facebook. Now you will be able to go to my facebook page, catch up on the latest (literally up to the minute...as in "is that Dr. Oz recommendation for real?") health and wellness info. and ask any question that comes to mind. Mr. Vitamin will...attempt...to give you an up front, un-biased and honest answer.
Today people come to health food stores, not just to find a product but many customers are seeking information. Where do you go when you need real, honest information for a product that may (or may not) help your ailment? Have you asked the sales person in your local big box "mart" store?...bet that didn't help much did it? Now-a-days even pharmasist are leery to give out any info. on alternative therapy's. Health food stores aren't what they used to be either. Payroll has been cut so tight that your well meaning sales person just doesn't have the time to spend giving you the info. you are searching for.
I've been there...I've seen it all and now you can benefit from this lifetime of experience and information by logging into www.eFoodDehydratorsPlus.com or checking out "Ask Mr. Vitamin" on Facebook. Stick with me, this should be fun.
